Every once in a while you get some. Drew Doughty and Alex Pietrangelo were taken pretty early and have been pretty integral to their teams' success.

Those players are great, but do they really change the game like a Crosby, OV, Stamkos, Tavares and other forwards do?

Obviously they are important, but they can only do so much, those teams also have incredible depth on forward. Name a defensive superstar without an elite crop of forward talent around him that single handedly won games or a cup for their teams?

Would you say that Ray Borque could have won a Cup without the forwards he had in his FINAL season. And wouldn't you say he was a superstar defensmen even with Boston all those years?

Absolutely not. Obviously the forwards are what put the pucks in the net.

However, the forwards in this year's draft are not viewed as the game changers like Crosby, OV, Stamkos, Tavares, etc. That's why I want the Sabres to grab Ekblad. If the Sabres are as bad next year, they just draft one of the game-changing forwards in 2015.

The problem with that is, we won't have enough good forwards on this team to make the defense worth a damn.

I mean unless, Myers, Zadorov, and Ristolainien become the top three D men in the league and no one can score on us.

Most likely Ekblad is going to get drafted first overall to the Panthers anyways, they need some defensemen as they have a good young forward core there and need some backend talent to help them out. We need forward talent. Who knows, maybe we will get a huge steal in the later rounds for defensemen.

I'm fully confident Zadorov, Ristolainen, Pysyk, and McCabe are going to be all solid guys for us. Even if some don't see it, Myers is looking like he is gonna flourish under Nolan too with how his game changed dramatically.

Right away, sure. That's why I say you take the game changing forwards next year. Take the stud defensman first, then start taking your stud fowards. In my opinion, Ristolainen is the only sure thing from that group of 4 you named.

We have two 1st round picks either this year or next year. Take a D man with whatever pick is second. Focus on forward first.

Florida has #1 now, so Ekblad is a moot point, since everyone seems to agree Florida will take him. That leaves us with the forwards. I'm still on the Reinhart bandwagon myself. He has 23 points in 12 playoff games this year. He is a center (which we need far more than wings), he is considered one of the smartest players in the draft, probably the best passer in the draft, and he has great leadership skills. His dad played for Calgary for 11 years, and his older brothers have been drafted, so he has been exposed to high level hockey since birth. I think he is an extremely low risk pick, with a great chance to play 15 years and be our captain in 5 years.

I would argue we need wings way more than centers, especially if Hodgson goes back to playing center.

...What do we do if the Islanders give us their 1st round pick this year? Or did they already postpone that to next year?

The Isles have until June 1 to decide. Popular wisdom says they keep the pick this year, and give us next year's pick, but this is NYI were talking about, so anything's possible.

If they do give us this year's pick, you do what Murray said - take the best available player, unless someone makes us an offer we can't refuse, of course. If we are picking 5th, chances are Ekblad, Draisaitl and the Sams are gone. That would probably leave us with Dal Colle, which is fine with me, although lots of people are talking about Ehlers, also.

Thatcher Demko I know is the top rated goalie from Boston College. Big boy too, 6'4".

The Isles should do the smart thing and give us their pick this year, next year I heard there are more than a few can't miss guys outside of McDavid also that will really help any of the bottom teams out.

The only ones I really know about next year are Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel. I don't know if 2015 is a deeper draft or just has more talent at the top end.

Why would they give us next year's pick? There is no sign that the Isles will be better next year so they might have a chance to get Mcdavid. This year showed that they don't need to be worse than the Sabres.

The last three years showed that you should be second last instead of last.

Why would they give us next year's pick? There is no sign that the Isles will be better next year so they might have a chance to get Mcdavid. This year showed that they don't need to be worse than the Sabres.

There are a few reasons.

First, I think NYI will do better next year. They made the playoffs last year and took 2 games from Pittsburgh. They just got off to a bad start this year. They finished the season 12-7-3 after the Olympics, and that was with Tavares hurt. Strome is coming along very well, and appears to be done with the AHL for good. He had 18 points in 37 games for NYI as a rookie.

Garth Snow's job is on the line next year, so he can't be complacent about making the team better immediately. NYI is not in tank mode like we were this year.

Giving us this year's #5 is like saying "If you think we were bad this year, just wait until next year!" It's hard enough being a NYI fan as it is. Also, since they are moving to Brooklyn, their fan base is a little bit in flux already.

Their owner is looking to sell this team. He's going to get more money selling a franchise that is trying to make the playoffs right now, as opposed to a shitty team that MIGHT get McDavid. A #5 pick is just too high to give up when you have an alternative. That player could reap benefits as early as next year. Vanek was a #5 pick.

As we all know from this year, Even if NYI finishes last next year, they'll still only have a 25% chance of getting McDavid.

It's certainly not an open and shut case, though. Next year's draft is considered much deeper than this year's draft. Maybe the potential new management dictates that they keep the 2015 pick. Also, we already have their 2015 2nd round pick, so for such a deep draft, they would only have the 2nd round pick they got from Philly as their top pick. And the Isles management is the most kooky in all of sports, so who knows?

In other words, the Islanders are fucked.
