I know I'm late with this but, ICHIRO IS A YANKEE??? WTF??????????? This is why MLB baseball has turned into such a joke. The Seattles and Torontos (not to mention the freakin Expos) of the world are just farm teams for the Yankees, Sox, and the hot national league team of the year. Fucking pathetic. Long live Area 51 in Safeco!
Amen, brother. That's why I abandoned MLB many years ago.
I remember during the lockout in '94 or whenever, some guy in the cafeteria at work saying he'd never watch MLB again. I laughed my ass off, because in the grand scheme of things, at that point in time, that stoppage didn't bother me at all. From 1970 on, for 3 decades I absolutely loved MLB, and I still love it for what it was back then. I also still have a great reverence for the MLB history that happened before I was born, and also its history before my father was born, for that matter. MLB was truly the national pastime, and rightly so.
Honestly, MLB is still very much an accurate barometer of where we are in this country, just like it has always been. The only problem is that it's now an ugly, ugly picture. The system has devolved to a point where the HAVES will not only continue to be the HAVES. They will continue to widen the gap between the HAVES and the HAVE NOTS. On an individual level, players aren't in it for the team or the fans any longer, they're completely in it for themselves. They get away with using performance-enhancing drugs, because ethics take a back seat to making money - that is if ethics get any kind of seat at all.
MLB has sold its soul, and I'm done with it, but I still think baseball is a great sport and I always will. I look forward to NCAA ball and even the Little League World Series every year, because nowadays that's where you'll find the heart of the sport.
