Something I do like about the look, even if it wasn't intentional, is that it looked like a vintage jersey left in the sun too long. Maybe if you brought a little vibrancy back into the blues and golds, it might look a lot better.

Have you tried making the text on the bottom white, and the text on the top the same shade as the blue in the logo?

If you multiply the font layer then turn some of the layers into black font or dark brown then apply bluring effects you can get a shadowed look that rocks.
