I think religious instruction was less than probably 5% of the curriculum.
My experience in a Lutheran school was much different. They went out of their way to repeatedly insult and belittle any science that wasn't in accordance with creationism. This bothered me because I've always been interested in science, and asked questions in class on more than one occasion that were honest questions, but earned me trips to the principal's office.
In one of our books, sections on evolution were ripped out. Parts of the earth science / geology sections were edited with black marker to get rid of anything that suggested the Earth was older than they said it was.
In history classes, I distinctly remember comments made about God punishing the British for mistreating their colonists as a significant reason the United States came into being.
I know not all schools are like that, but that flavors my impressions of them.
