You can't "shut it off" for emergency purposes. All phones will be able to be "ping'ed" by their providers no matter what your settings are. When you turn off "PING" you are just not allowing others to find your phone (ie. GPS or google maps). The only way your provider would not be able to ping your phone is if it was off

you sure about that? i remember hearing about a girl who was raped and murdered, then someone left her body in the woods. her cell phone was on, but couldnt "PING" her phone to find her. maybe my facts are hazy. regardless, i dont care if anyone knows where i am.

There could have been other variables related to that. If you're in the woods, you may not be in an area where there are cell towers which are needed for PINGING. Also, older phones do not have that capabilities.
