Overall, I'm very pleased. It's tough to celebrate sending more troops, but it's a job that needs to be finished. Let us remember that those in todays Armed Forces freely and willingly chose to fight for our Freedom.

Unfortunately Schony, this most recent call up of 30k troops will not end the war on terror, it may and I stress may give Afghanistan a couple of years of reprieve. This policy implements, it will implement again in 4 or 5 years. Everytime we pull troops out, the Taliban will attempt to move back in, we will be forced to reinsert troops.

No, ETC and Xcheck are correct, wipe em all out, that way you know the problem won't resurface in that part of the world for years and years to come, if at all. I'm just being a realist here.

I'm tired and not reading the whole thing so forgive me if I say something that's been said...

We shouldn't be there at all, what the hell is it getting us? Oil? HA. We went with no visible plan (IMO) and now we have people dying for no god damn reason. At this point I don't care who does it just GET THOSE MEN OUT. It doesn't have to be now, just within a set amount of time so we aren't stuck there forever.

So we've got some pretty varied opinions here, but one thing is certain...the President didn't do himself any favors by taking 80 days to come up with this plan. He's losing the hearts and minds at home.

The opinion among independents is almost shocking.

I should have been more clear, but wasn't on purpose. I drew the parallel between those fighting now vs Vietnam because this isn't a draft.

Overall, I was pleased with the speech itself. I agree whole heartedly with everything you wrote. I don't support an 18 month pull out until every one of those x%S#@ are annihilated.

I was tossed between the choices given. It is kind of late, but not too late. I'm pissed that it took Obama 9 months to acknowledge McChrystals request, yet happy to see his decision is heading in the right direction. Get out of Iraq, put our forces where they belong, combat terrorism, protect our country from further attacks. People who think we should just pull out and go about our merry way like 9/11 never happened are kidding themselves.

It's extremely hard for me to separate my views from emotion given that I feel like I'm handing my son to the wolves so I try not to say too much ;)

He didn't do himself any favors by taking so long, but I thought his decision in the long run was the right one (aside from a few minor details like an 18 month deadline  ) He didn't lose my mind or heart tonight, he got a piece of it for the first time. That could all change tomorrow. I don't know. For tonight, I have to say I fell on the favorable side rather than in opposition to his decision. Had his announced he was sending no more troops at all, I would be ballistic.

I'm finding others viewpoints fascinating. I've been watching cable news all night and CNN is interviewing a former Nam vet who says this is ridiculous. He claims the war should be in Saudi Arabia not Afghanistan and Larry King is doing a good job of trying to get him to think his thoughts through.

This former Vet also JUST said Obama took bad advice from his General and that he feels sorry for the parents of those 30,000 because they will never come home. WTF? That was comforting.

Maybe I'm in denial.

no...Viet Nam was very very different.
However, we shouldn't forget the history lesson the Soviet war in Afghanistan teaches.

Oh My. Get this. I just went to e-mail Larry King and found out that Nam vet was named Michael Moore  Oops.

Is it the same one? If so, it's no wonder I thought the guy was an asshole

Obama could shit a rainbow and people would debate it saying there was too much green in it. Believe me, I'm not even an Obama proponent, I'm just trying to find some solace in this whole mess.

Still in denial ;)

Oh hell no....Michael Moore the director is the "hide in Canada" type if the draft ever hit him...well that and he's not old enough.

Thanks. I never saw THE Michael Moore (on purpose) so I had no clue what he looked like or how old he was.

Finally, I'm hearing some un-biased reporting on cable news.

I'm wondering what would make the general populace happy right now?

What did people think? Pull out and suffer another 911 attack or send more soldiers to die?

Sometimes I wish I had no television or radio.

Afghanistan is just a really hard nut to crack.
The government is corrupt as hell....the people will go along with whoever has the most guns, taliban, war lords, whatever...they generate a large portion of their GDP via narco-trafficking...a large portion of the country isn't even under governmental control...it's a mess.

Michael Moore is the Glenn Beck of the left, although not nearly as nutty.

He does have good points from time to time, but they're totally overshadowed by his bluster and hyperbole. I guess he does that to try to bring more attention to those good points, but more often than not he ends up just looking foolish.
