I'll add that I think that jobs bill was a mess that basically only extended unemployment benefits and didn't actually create jobs...but Reid is now going to make it even worse...and more expensive. |

Wait a sec Ed.... I thought you were a fiscal conservative above all else? The Reid bill is estimated to cost $15B. The Baucus bill was estimated to cost $85B. This should be good, right? |

Democrats calling for bipartisanship then shitting on Republicans at the 11th hour is the point. fuck em. I now hope every Senate vote until November is a party line no vote from Republicans. Recent remarks on the subject are spot on. Democrats don't want bipartisanship...they want surrender. |

Frankly, I'm glad the the Democrats have given up on attempting bipartisanship. What has it gotten them? Nothing. The Republicans are reinforcing their party of no platform. They say Obama doesn't listen to their ideas, but then when their ideas get incorporated into bills, they vote against them because it hurts Obama. They wanted an open forum on health care reform. Obama says OK and sets it up, then the Repubs don't want to go because they think it's a 'trap'. The Republicans screamed when Medicare funding was reduced by a few hundred million in the reform bills....except they WANT TO CUT MORE FUNDING than what was in the bills!!! The problem with Democrats is that they try this bipartisan stuff, and the republicans just use the opportunity to screw them as much as possible to set themselves up for the next election cycle. |

Um....this is, I think the first actually bipartisan bill I've seen come out of this Senate. How can you say with a straight face they've honestly attempted bipartisanship? Saying "we'll listen to your ideas" then ignore them is not bipartisanship...it's lip service. |

It contains a $10 billion plan to exempt companies from paying their share of Social Security payroll taxes for new hires who had been unemployed for at least 60 days this year. What Democrat came up with that idea? Why, none other than Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah. Well, how about the provision to permit businesses to write off equipment purchases as a business expense? Or a $31 billion package of tax breaks for individuals and businesses? Those Democratic ideas? Too much for Republicans to stomach tax cuts for businesses, Cross? If they had passed the original bill, which was full of all kinds of pork, two things would have happened: 1) Four or five Republicans would have voted for it and then the GOP would have used that bill to beat Democrats over the head in November as big spending pigs at the trough, and 2) you would have created a thread, Cross, about how wasteful that bill was and that this was another example of why the country needs a Republican Congress. I too, prefer straight line party votes, just as soon as the Senate changes the filibuster rule that allows the minority to dictate to the democratically elected majority. |

Didn't I tell you, back when you were worrying about Democrats controlling the House, Senate and presidency? I know my party. The Romans used to have a way of instilling backbone, called decimation, where they would randomly kill every tenth man in a regiment that showed lack of courage. I'm ready to try that with the Democrats in the Senate. |
