Seeking to avoid alienating Beijing, Obama had delayed meeting the Dalai Lama until after first seeing Chinese leaders during his Asia trip last year.

Kiss that Chinese ass Obama...kiss it good.

He's showing how GWB publicly and overtly welcomed the Tibetan monk, while Obama snuck a quick, secretive visit in to appease Chinese leaders.

The Dalai Lama is a man of peace living in exile because China is occupying Tibet.

The Dalai Lama is a hero to most freedom and peace loving people.

Freeing Tibet has been a pet project of the left in this country for a long time.

Evil bastard GWB openly welcomed the Dalai Lama without much consideration of how the Chinese would react.

Obama postpones his meeting until after he meets with China so he doesn't offend them then when he does meet with him it's behind closed doors.

Obama = China's bitch

Bingo.

So what you're saying Cross is that we shouldn't give a damn about how China feels?

If appeasing totalitarians is good foreign policy, than Obama is the best since Chamberlain.

Bingo.

You mean the human rights violating, polluting, political prisoner killing, communist dictatorship?

Am I saying we should treat the oppressed and peaceful Dalai Lama with more deference than them?

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying.

And before you dig a deeper hole, most Democrats and liberals agree with me on this issue.

If you want to criticize the guy for how he handled a situation, I can accept that, even if I don't agree.

Coming out and calling him a 'pansy' is pretty weak though.

What other reason could he have handled the situation this way other than he was scared of how China would react?

Do you think he handled this well?

Should the US be supporting the Tibetan people or China's claim to their territory?

Some called Bush a "cowboy" for the way he handled foreign affairs...I call Obama a pansy.

You didn't need to post the last line. I don't lean one way or the other.

My point is, China is one of our biggest lenders, and a world superpower. It wouldn't be wise to piss them off.

I'm behind you 100% with this one... China owned us with this one.

The way I see it, it's our moral obligation as the leader of the free world to stand by the oppressed and occupied people of Tibet.

Money shouldn't get in the way of right and wrong.

And China has been selling our debt the last 2 weeks anyway.
Japan is now the largest holder of US debt.

Cross, he's no pansy. It's power he craves, and in that pursuit he will be ruthless towards those who oppose him and befriend (use) any who are deemed necessary towards achieving his goals. China is effectively funding his mammoth domestic spending policies, so he will be sure to make them happy with these gestures - even if that requires making a doody on the Dali's head.

To be fair, all presidents and politicians thirst for power - at least to some degree, but Obama is perhaps the most ambitious, and is certainly the most effective at covering his true intentions with the populist ruse of idealism under the slogan "hope and change".

Don't underestimate this man.

I don't have enough info about the situation to make a decision on how he handled it. It's foreign policy, not checkers. Sometimes every possible option is a bad choice.

Any meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama , no matter when it happened, would end up with China bitching. It matters not if he did it before he met with China, or after.

My point is that although I didn't agree with many of Bush's decisions, I gave him the respect of not referring to him as a pansy. I think that this president deserves the same respect, but if you want to insult the guy, that's your prerogative.

If the Dalai Lama is happy with what happened, why should we be all enraged about it?

Quote:
Speaking to reporters on the White House driveway, the Dalai Lama declared himself "very happy" with the session. The exiled Tibetan leader said he spoke to Obama about the promotion of human value, religious harmony, a greater leadership role for women around the world and the concerns of the Tibetan people. He said Obama was "very much supportive."

Irony, as surprising as it may seem, I really do have tremendous respect for Obama's power and ambition. I may not agree with him politically, but that doesn't mean I think he's weak, stupid or incompetent. Arrogant, yes, and in the end that could become his downfall if left unchecked.
