A woman in Arizona suffered from pulmonary hypertension, and was admitted to the ER of a Catholic church having complications with her pregnancy, 11 weeks in. After consultation with doctors, the patient, and family, it was determined that an abortion was called for to save the live of the mother.

Sister Margaret McBride, a hospital administrator, was charged with approving or denying the abortion. Again, the medical staff determined that if the abortion was not performed, the mother would die. The Sister consulted with the Ethics Committee of the hospital, and the abortion was approved. The mother lived.

What happened when the Phoenix Diocese found out? Sister Margaret McBride was demoted, and she's now just Margaret McBride. She was excommunicated for approving the abortion.


If I'm ever seriously hurt, I expect to be taken to the closest hospital for treatment. If that hospital happens to be Catholic run, I expect to get the full and correct MEDICAL treatment without with will of the Catholic Church being imposed upon me. I applaud Sister McBride for making a difficult decision. I also wish the Church would get out of the business of medicine.

Shame on the Church for allowing priests to play around with pre-pubescent penises without repercussions while other good people get fucked in the ass for making tough choices in the best interests of a patient.

Eleven weeks along isn't exactly far enough into the pregnancy for the fetus/infant at that point to survive if the mother dies, anyway. Durrr.

Very well said. Just had a discussion about this kind of thing yesterday with my wife actually. She's very religious and I'm of course a heathen destined for Hell. She was planning on running to raise money for a pro-life organization and I decided to ask her three questions.

do you approve of abortions in the following situations?:

1. If a child is molested
2. A woman is raped
3. The life of the mother is at stake

She of course said she would support an abortion in those situations so I told her that she would be raising money for an organization that would have ALL abortions illegal. She's not running anymore.

As I understand it, the Catholic church doesn't explicitly disallow life support, but does kinda frown upon it.
