Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Quote: When I became the NASA administrator -- or before I became the NASA administrator -- he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering ~NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07 ... s-muslims/ How about this...when a Muslim country eventually builds a rocket NOT designed to kill people we can let them have a relationship with NASA. Maybe Obama just got his schedule mixed up and thought he was meeting with the director of the Department of Education or an ambassador perhaps. That's the only explanation I can think of for this idiocy. |

While they did have a great run from the 900-1300 (ish) with Math, science and being the most advanced culture in the world at the time, (EDIT, THIS IS DEBATABLE) they like to blow shit up now, and I'd rather not help them get good rockets. |

Absolutely disgusting. I can only hope that Bolden was taking something out of context. Jeez. One would think "explore space" would be say...the number one priority? |

National Aeronautics and Space Administration......hmmm how that connection to Muslims was made is still throwing me for a loop. Was this high maybe? |

Well since im funded by the NSF and NASA, I can only speak well of them. Lets just say it was a fun night before and he was obviously not thinking clearly at that time. Please just ignore this and go on with your daily lives. Nothing happened here children |

Nothing happened here children Well I'd love to pass this off as him playing up to his audience (Al Jezeera) and misspeaking, this isn't the first time he's said the exact same thing. Quote: A Feb. 16 blog in the Orlando Sentinel reported that Bolden discussed the outreach during a lecture to engineering students. As he did in the interview with Al Jazeera last month, Bolden was quoted then saying Obama told him to "find ways to reach out to dominantly Muslim countries."
He reportedly talked about the importance of helping countries establish space programs and pointed to the largest Muslim country in the world, Indonesia, as a possible partner. "We really like Indonesia because the State Department, the Department of Education (and) other agencies in the U.S. are reaching out to Indonesia as the largest Muslim nation in the world," he said. |

Well, I was a fed last summer in Colorado. You get a shitload of e-mail that don't even pertain to you just because you're a fed. I wouldn't put it past him that he got one of those, and took it way too seriously. |

Quote: When...I became the NASA administrator -- he charged me with three things. Sounds pretty clear and specific to me. I'm not blaming the guy for anything...he takes his marching orders from the President. The President is the one that looks like a damn fool. |

well, i think he was really there for a diplomatic purpose, speaking to the audience. I really think his thirdmost objective was one of those "make some really stupidly low attempt to appease the muslim community", which he did by appealing to that community. The main mission for nasa with the removal of funding for the space program is to build better technologies. We all know that most high-up officials of agencies are just puppets. |

Sure, that may explain why he said that to Al-Jazeera, but it doesn't explain why he would have said the same thing to a group of Florida engineering students. |

he's gotta have something to do seeing and BHO cut NASA funding... "hey, we can only hitch hike to space with the Russians, so why don't you go make Muslims feel better"... huh, ok mr. president.... again, why? i just don't get it... |

Obama didn't cut NASA funding. He actually proposed an increase this year. Whether or not his proposed budget actually helps anything is a topic of large debate right now though. It certainly could use some improvement. But Congress controls the appropriations and it is important to note that the budget he proposed has not been passed yet...nor do I expect it to pass in it's current form. However, one of the likely alternatives is no better - if Congress does not pass this budget and does not come up with their own by the time they go on recess, they'll likely appropriate at FY2010 levels...which is just as disastrous...continuing to fund Ares I and mandating it's continuing development, which is going to lead us nowhere. Now, there are rumors that he may propose a $1 billion decrease in budget in FY2012...that would be terrible. I hope that is not the case. Of course, it has to get through Congress. I think that Bolden has been doing what he has been told - that he would not necessarily support the budget in its current state otherwise. He has been staunchly defending it, but often without any real answers. I can't help but think that it was basically thrown in front of him without any real input or discussion. It certainly seems that way, considering he did a study on heavy launch vehicles that ultimately concluded a shuttle-derived vehicle (SDHLV) would be the best architecture for the future...which is what many have been wanting for a long time now! It's a shame, really. |
