Hi guys. Recently my wife as been doing a lot of soul searching and has been looking for a church that she feels comfortable with. She's been going to a "non-denominational" church with her friend and things were going really well until last weekend. Apparently the service started like usual but they had this guest speaker booked who took a left turn somewhere and started doing the laying of the hands deal and inciting people to speak in tongues. She has been having some migraines and her friends told her to go up and see if she could get "healed". Now my wife is a christian lady but she's also logical and science minded. She couldn't get out of there fast enough. She didn't go up and afterward her friend was telling her how disappointed she was. Her friend gave her the speech on belief, faith, the spirit flowing through you and the whole shebang. My wife tried to tell her that she thought it was all bull but her friend couldn't believe that she would say that.

She's a bit pissed off and doesn't want to be part of this nonsense again so we're looking at other churches for her and the kids. Just found it really interesting as a non believer. Here's a clip of the kind of shenanigans that was going on from what she said.

I posted this in the political forum just in case someone gets all pissed off.

She should check out a mosque.

There are TONS of methods for relieving migraines. I'm sure you've researched it, and already know more than me, but keep researching, and try combination therapies. I'm sure something will help. My oldest brother had cluster headaches(worse than migraines) most of his life. Oxygen helped him a lot, but he suffered A LOT. I'm sure there are some newer things out there to try now.

The migraines weren't the point of this topic is my guess, but rather what occurred after her affliction was disclosed. I'm sure she'd have seen the laying-on of hands on someone else.

Well, Mike, that's how the evangelical denominations of Christianity work - they encourage (might be too mellow a word) participation and conversion.

Yeah it's all about conversion and being one of the pack. I mean personally i don't believe in this stuff but despite that, if it is true, would you want someone to just "go along" with it? Wouldn't that cheapen the huge ridiculous miracle of God healing people? Candice felt she'd be pressured to fake it if she went up there so she didn't want to, and once she got the drift that a lot of these people were faking it to keep their place in the pack so to speak, she started to question the whole church. I mean that church, not...THE Church.

As far as searching she has gone to services at a few local churches and is settling on a small Presbyterian church near by I believe. She's not certain but really likes it. The shitty thing is the guilt her churchy buds are laying on her. Crap about "family" and "faith" and blah blah blah. She finally had to tell them that she doesn't believe in any of the "crazy" church stuff as she calls it. For her it's about community, spirituality, her personal path and surrounding herself with good people, not theatrics or people who approach her with peer pressure.

I respect that man, being religious and having a life mission to convert the world are two different things. Keeping it personal and within your family and friends is a okay in my book. We all have that freedom in this country. Of course there are a lot of people that press on those boundaries though. Candice had thought this church to be a relaxing place to learn more about the faith that she was raised in now that she is an adult but instead she found a bunch of kool aid drinkers wanting her to go pay lip service to the preacher and congregation. She was a bit disappointed about it.

One thing she said though is that being a religious woman, it was the first time she ever felt pressure from religious people. She asked if that is how I feel (as an atheist) when she brings her church buds over and they ask why I "hate Jesus". I love her.

Unitarians have been around since 1825 and the UU church since 1961.
But you knew that.

next up: I have a "friend" that saw these crazy Christians do X.

What is your point? Are you just trying to pick a fight?

I mean really. What does anything you just posted have to do with what I said? How is anything I wrote offensive to you? Go flex your muscles somewhere else dick.

Are we doing the dick/asshole thing in the dragons thread?? I'm not calling for an axe on it, but this is a bit out of hand. Obvious name calling should get ya a weeks rest from politics, imo. I'm personally not butt-hurt at anyone about anything, but I can see trouble coming at this rate.

How about constantly picking fights with people?

My point is there are a plethora of non-denominational, non-weird, non-offensive christian based churches.
They're not hard to find and many of them are nation-wide.

30 year old video notwithstanding, what's the point of this thread?

Got no time for this either. All I want is the name calling to end, and I'm "starting a fight"? Seriously dude, I'll have no problem just dipping from the forum, because having a discussion/debate has become nearly impossible here. If you wanna blame me, then be my guest. I'm gonna assume I wasn't the one who created/continues the tradition of people being assholes to each other here. I'm pretty close to just calling it quits at least until hockey starts.

To talk about something that my wife and I experienced and are going through. Of course there are many more "non-weird" churches out there than the other. I wasn't offensive, bias, attacking...nothing. I was discussing something that matters to me which is the point here if I'm not mistaken. What was your point honestly? I just wrote that she has been searching and found a nice laid back church close by.....so what's your point? Seems like you swooped in to start another fight with me and nothing more.

Aha, we have found the root of the problem... Why do you hate Jesus? Has he not done enough for you, vile sinner? Must you anger him to do more? :)
