Seriously, what does it take for a federal beaurocrat to lose their job? The ATF allows thousands of guns to be sold to Mexican drug cartels so they can track them. But they lose track of them. Two of the guns then show up at the scene of a murdered border patrol agent. Operation Fast and Furious is a shameful failure. And what happens to the head of ATF, who was connected to the operation? He is reassigned to another post in the Department of Justice. If I had such a horrible failure on my watch in any private sector job I would have been fired so fast my pants would still be in the office.

Rediculous. If I didn't loathe the federal government as a matter of principal, I would be tempted to get a career started there.

I don't really see it any different in the upper echelons of the private sector. Look at the endless parade of Wall Street banking and finance executives responsible for the Great Recession of 2008. Some of these people belong in jail. What was their punishment? $150 BILLION in compensation and bonuses in 2010.

Good point. Only the Wall Street fat cats getting recycled around all those firms had those compensation packages negotiated before they tanked their companies. They were stupid to structure their contracts in such a fashion that a CEO who drove them into a ditch got rewarded for it.

Yeah?
Ok, since you're the judge and jury, what specific laws were broken and by whom?

While I agree on the surface it seems pretty fucked...I have to think that the people who killed those agents would have had guns regardless of whether the ATF (or whomever was responsible for this) did this operation or not.

And while it appears that this was a complete fuck up, at least they TRIED something vaguely clever. I'd rather we take swings and have the occasional miss than just sit back and expect mexico to actually do something about it.

I'd like to know more details about what EXACTLY the plan was, and how it went wrong (like...if the plan is to track guns, how did they lose track of the guns?) because it seems like the initial plan made sense. And surely, if it had worked, it would be hailed as brilliant.

When there's a body count you're not allowed to say "whoops".

Judging by the lack of real consequences, apparently 'whoops' suffices.

And really, it seems on par with regular military screwups. they happen, our soldiers die, whoops. It's fucked, but what is the alternative, that we dont extend ourselves into dangerous positions in order to protect our interests?
