Now this is one show I'm looking forward to watching... Quote: 'V' aims at Obamamania
By Glenn Garvin McClatchy/Tribune News November 3, 2009 http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertain ... rint.story Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care. The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: "Why don't you show some respect?!" The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: "Embracing change is never easy." So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait -- did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who's come here to eat us? Welcome to ABC's "V," the most fascinating and bound to be the most controversial new show of the fall television season. Nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity, it's also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president's supporters and delight his detractors. "We're all so quick to jump on the bandwagon," observes one character. "A ride on the bandwagon, it sounds like fun. But before we get on, let us at least make sure it is sturdy." The bandwagon in this case is conspicuously saucer-shaped. "V" starts with the arrival of a couple of dozen ships from outer space, piloted by creatures who look like humans except a lot prettier. "Don't be frightened," says their luminously beautiful leader Anna (Morena Baccarin, "Serenity"). "We mean no harm." The aliens -- who become known as V's, for visitors -- quickly enthrall their wide-eyed human hosts. A handful of dissidents hold out against the rapturous reception given the V's. Some are simply uneasy, such as the youthful priest Father Jack (Joel Gretsch, "The 4400"), who sharply criticizes the Vatican's embrace of the V's as divine creations: "Rattlesnakes are God's creatures too." With or without the political sheen, "V" is sweeping television storytelling at its best. Whether you choose to view it as a blood-and-guts war story, a spy thriller (unlike the original show, these V's are perfect replicas of humans, so you never really know who might be sitting beside you at the bar), a high-stakes family drama (as households divide over the intentions of the V's), a religious allegory (the V's make a crippled man walk, filling up churches again) or just a sci-fi throwback to the days of "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" and "The Thing," "V" is irresistible. This bandwagon is definitely worth jumping on. |

I dont think I even need to read that to know that your endless ranting about Obama is basically equivalent to a small little child plugging his ears and kicking his feet to avoid bathtime. seriously, get a new schtick. And why isnt this in the political crap section? I dont come to the lounge to be bombarded with your mania, thats why I stay out of the political section. |

If you had read it you'd feel like a complete moron right now for popping off like that. You see, I didn't even write it, but thanks in advance for thinking I'm employed by the Chicago Tribune as an entertainment columnist. What's with all the hostility? |

Did anyone catch the original movies being shown on SyFy this weekend, or that they're showing the original series now, starting yesterday? |

The coin has flipped, but the ranting is not very different. It's funny, even the pop culture references are pretty similar. I'm glad I'm neither a republican nor a democrat. |

Geez, forgot about this after it went to politics. And why isnt this in the political crap section? I dont come to the lounge to be bombarded with your mania, thats why I stay out of the political section. Because it's easier than thinking independently? CV, i'm not following, what are you responding to? the only question I asked is why this thread wasnt in the political section, and your reply to that is "because it's easier than thinking independantly?" That doesnt really make sense as an answer to my question. Unless perhaps you're responding to what i'm saying about ETC? Could you clarify? ETC, I did read what you posted, I know/knew it was not from you. What I meant to get across was the feeling like nothing you have to post regarding this subject is going to be anything new. You keep up with the same routine all the time, and hell, I dont even come into the political section...i'm just talking about random things you say in the lounge. It's always this 1984 crap, how anyone who voted for obama is some sort of mindless zombie who is incapable of thought. It's fucking tiring. You do realize that there are plenty of people out there who both voted for obama and ARE NOT rabid socialist terrorists, nor meek mindless lambs, RIGHT??? Then how come you talk to 'the other side' as if we are fucking retarded? At first I thought you were just kidding with those comments, but anyone not suffering from asbergers should have realized by now how stale and childish that stuff is. As far as I know you in a sabres fan sense...you seem like an awesome dude i'd love to have a beer with, but when you come at rational, reasonable people who occupy the left of center with this constant childish stance, it's just...insulting. It's like those people at the town hall meetings who destroy the debate by standing up and screaming at the top of their lungs. But fuckit, like I said, I dont come into the political room for a reason. I like this place and I dont want to dislike my fellow sabres fans because of how they express their opinions on a very divisive topic. And because clearly, I get heated about things and will shoot off a reply which might be less diplomatic than i'd like, and I'm not looking to go around making enemies. I'm sure random bits of this post will be quoted and mocked, and seriously...go to town and have fun with that. rant over. |

I think that about the only comparison is that both Obama and da V's are secretly lizards eating our poor and homeless while we go around and fawn over them night and day... Too soon? |

Just that one for me...couldn't resist EDIT: aw shit...I posted as admin <-- I fail CC, when did I ever say that other examples of that behavior were any less irrational? I dont espouse extremism, close-mindedness, or dogmatic thinking. Those protesters dont represent me, pelosi doesnt represent me, how come you're trying to link the content of that video with my personal beliefs? The anti-war protesters only make the town hall protesters less egregious relatively, not actually. They still derailed the debate with immature tactics akin to covering your ears and screaming "I CANT HEAR YOU". It's not what rational people do, it's what scared, close-minded, hypnotized tools do, on BOTH sides. It seems impossible to try and stand anywhere near the middle with the discussion here, it's like everyone's got to take an extreme stance in order to be heard or something. Fuck I hate the political room, but i'm not going to post somewhere and then pull a machbye-now. Seriously...i'd much rather be popping the top off a decent stout, rolling up a fatty and chatting with you guys in a GDT while our boys rip it the fuck up. I DO quite regret posting in this thread at all. Ok, time to go apply for my welfare check for me and my 17 illegitimate children mothered by several illegal immigrant women I allow to live in my apartment. |
