Post subject:  Pirates moving to Albany?

I remember watching the game last night and hearing about the Albany River Rats moving to (Charlotte?) NC. I just google'd "Sabres" news, as is my morning routine, and saw an article that the Pirates may be looking into moving to Albany after the Rats leave town.

YES! I just posted something like that on the Times Union Center page on facebook that the Sabres could move their AHL team to Albo...Oh man, that would be SICK!

Though I hated the River Rats for a long time (Was an Adirondack Red Wings fan until they bounced), guess I'd have to let bygones be bygones

I just like the idea of my AHL team in my state, but it would be really sad to see the long history of the Portland Pirates come to an end. That team really is beloved by it's people.

Good, this would help out so much than having Portland so friggin far away. How far is Albany to Buffalo anyway?

About a five and a half hour drive, I'd say.

Christ, just kick the fat man in the balls, and get him away from Rochester. Move the damn farm back to Rochester. It may not please ferret, but it would work just fine for me.

As much as I want our farm back in Rochester, I really respect what Curt Styres is doing for them (and the Knighthawks) and want to see him succeed.

I say BTG buys 'em and moves 'em to somewhere in the 716

The Pirates average 4,144 fans in the 7,000-seat Civic Center.

They need to show a little more love.

Of course, the Times Union Center in Albany seats 14,000 and the River Rats are only averaging 3,517.

Put the bloody team in Rochester so we can see a good half dozen games a season. I don't give a rats (Albany River or other) ass about Styres or The Knighthawks.

I have a hard time with my hometown not having the Sabres farm team anymore - move em back to Rochachacha!!!

That way when i go back to see the folks, I get to go see the up and commers play, not some bullshit squad for FLA!!

Look, the Pirates aren't moving to Rochester. Golisano bankrolling a new arena here is 1000% more likely than us getting the Amerks (or the city of Rochester) back. Get off it.

Lockport sure could use a boost ;)

From what I am hearing/reading, the Pirates ownership is playing Albany against Portland to get the new lease terms they want. Something similar went down the last time they worked out a lease. It would really have to fall apart for the team to move, and personally I hope they don't.

Ennis Named AHL Rookie Of The Month; Pirates On The Move?

WGR News Reporting
Sabres prospect Tyler Ennis has been named the AHL's rookie of the month for February. The 20-year old had 17 points in 14 games for the Portland Pirates, including six goals. During the month, the Pirates went from fourth to first place in the Atlantic Division.

Ennis was selected 26th in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Sabres. Right now he leads all AHL rookies with 19 goals (tied), 40 assists and 59 points. He played one game with the Sabres this season -- scoring a goal in Buffalo's 3-2 win over the Flyers on November 14th.

Also today, Pirates CEO and Managing Owner Brian Petrovek denied reports that the franchise will be moving from Portland to Albany, NY. His announcement comes after the general manager of Albany's Times Union Center told a newspaper that he expects to have a deal with the Pirates signed within 7-10 days.

Petrovek told the Portland Press Herald that he is still negotiating a lease extension with the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Having the Sabres JV team in Albo will generate more Sabres fans here. And shut those crybaby Rags fans up about the Sabres MSG TV deal.

The CCCC board of trustees met with Brian Petrovek today, and proposed a change in relationship with the Pirates that would drastically alter the Pirates' control or and existance at the rink.

Portland Press Herald's article

Afterwards, Petrovek held a press conference to say to the media that they will not talk about the proceedings anymore.

Article from Pirates' official site

-----------------------------------------------------------

What I find important in all of this is that it is finally acknowledged as concrete fact that Petrovek has been scouting Albany and talking to them about possibly moving there. Up until now, it was only hearsay and conjecture.

We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Please come to Albany, Pirates. I'd love to see our prospects play regularly next year.
