I had a girlfriend years ago who liked country. I hated it. She told me once that she used to also hate country, but she came around. She told me it would happen to me, too, and I laughed in her face. Guess what? 10-15 years later I've really learned to like a lot of it. But make no mistake. There are two different kinds of country. There is the Nashville kind which tends to be kinda cookie-cutter, lowest common denominator, and then there's everything else. But don't take my word for it. Here is Hank Williams III explaining the situation better than I ever could... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEY8ARSGHTU |

I like how you use Hank III as an example when he's a hard-as-fuck metalhead 99% of the time (Assjack, Superjoint Ritual). The Williams clan are FUCKING AWESOME. (Hank III is just guitarist in Superjoint - that's Phil Anselmo on vox) |

Country music isn't that bad in all honesty, I don't really listen to it much anymore but my sister and mom do. But most country guitar riffs re a combination of blues licks and such anyway, well all rock and music was basically derived from the Blues. |

There are some artists that are mystifyingly played on country stations, chiefly Shania Twain. |

I enjoy pop country for the most part. Taylor Swift, Toby Keith, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, LeeAnn Womack, Rascal Flatts, etc. My uncle is a record producer for The Valory Music Company, who has artists Justin Moore, Reba McIntyre, Jewel, and Jimmy Wayne. Country has always been around my family. |

Because there are songs released by several of those artists that fit a more traditional notion of "country." |

I've always had a hard time enjoying popular country music, but since my dad always played classic stuff when I was a kid, I've been a fan of old outlaw country and classic rockabilly (the natural offspring of rock and country) for a long time. Hank Sr., old Elvis, the Highwaymen...all great stuff. |

I don't like the cut-and-dry country, but Alt Country as a genre (see: Wilco, Neko Case, Ryan Adams, Vic Chesnutt) has turned into something quite spectacular, in my opinion. |

Toby Keith really annoys me. On one hand I respect that he writes his own songs. On the other hand, he has no quality control and puts out some real shitty work (Hottie) when he is capable of so much better. |

THANK YOU!!!! I couldn't agree more. "Alt-country" as a term kind of developed after Uncle Tupelo hit the scene in the late 80's. Uncle Tupelo included Jay Farrar (Son Volt) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), and they were really great. You could argue that Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers were true alt-country before the term was ever coined. Neko Case - wow what a voice! If you like her, you might like Kasey Chambers. Here is Steve Earle... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhj5Y4gG ... re=related |

I love Johnny Cash. I like Ryan Adams too but sometimes he can be a bit too country for my liking. I really can't stand pop country. But I can like more of the folk country genre, depending on the artist. |

Man, when i drove through Kansas there was a real problem. I have one of those radio tuner deals for my Ipod but everyone and his brother has a radio station there...EVERYONE I TELLS YA!!!! Problem is that if you find a station that your Ipod can tune in to it only lasts for a few miles then WAMMO.....Country music....or some preacher. And did I forget to mention that going from one side of Kansas to the other takes three weeks? YES!! Three whole weeks. It's science. |
