The Hockey News have a nice article about Miller being left out of the MVP nomination. One stat that really stands out is that with Miller, Buffalo got 67% of the points. Without him, we got only 38%. No other team had that big drop between their goalies. By comparison, Washington still took 75% of the points WITHOUT Ovechkin.. With him, they got .736% of the points.

Most valuable player should be just that. The guy who is most valuable to his team. We would have been in the bottom without Miller. The Caps would still have won east without Ovie. But I think a lot of the voters consider this trophy to be "The best player in the league"-trophy and not what it actually stands for..

That's a pretty fair analysis IMO.

Depends how you spin that stat though.
The existence of a large differential only proves Miller is that good OR Lalime sucks that bad.
Of course I think he should have been nominated, but that stat doesn't sell me ;)

That was a good read. I still think he should have been nominated. He at least deserves it over Ovechkin.

If I didn't already loathe the idea of a goalie winning that award I would get behind this logic, but it's too late for me.

Now the Vezina? That's money in Miller's bank as far as I'm concerned. That article can be applied to that award as well.

miller had a great season. i hope he can replicate it next year. i dont see why he cant have another solid season. he was SO dialed in october-january... his play sorta came down to earth, but i think he got a little worn out.

Sort of irrelevant. It's not about proving who's good and who sucks. It's about proving who is most valuable to their team.

The stats proving that Lalime sucks boosts the contention for Ryan Miller even more, because it means he's that much more important to the Sabres' success. ;)

Well I think it's obvious that for whatever reason, Lalime did not work out for us. Some people say that it's because of how infrequently he played...but how come other teams who play their starting goalie as much as Miller don't seem to have such an issue with their backups? I'm not saying it's all on Lalime, because a lot of the times the team just didn't show up for him, but Lalime just didn't deliver.

OV and Crosby out, Miller and Bryz in. Miller wins it, and probably Sedin second and Bryz third.

I would be happy, but the real meaning of the trophy has gone out the window since 2005.

Who would you rather have on a team? A guy who can put up 120 points but he's the biggest defensive liability and can only play the offensive zone, but he's damn good at that? But when the puck goes the other way you are left screaming at him for very poor backchecking.

Or a guy who puts up 70 points, but can play the PK, isn't afraid to hit, isn't afraid to block a shot, and can still play on the PP and is never a minus player ever? A guy who can literally shut down those opposing players?

Who would be more valuable to their team then?

the real meaning of the trophy has never been upheld. its simply been the best player in the league. and thats what it should be.

Then the Pearson Lindsay Award should be eliminated.

the pearson is dumb anyways. im a pro-union guy (come on, look where im from), but FUCK the PA.

however, after reading this, my stance on goalies winning the MVP hasnt changed, but no longer as concrete as it was.

off topic: dont ever make the joke "were going union" at work. its almost gotten me fired.
