What is wrong with Myers? In the past 2 games, he has left Miller out to dry for 6 goals. Did he forget how to play defense?

I'm not going to get down on are best defenseman just yet but I have noticed a couple of things and people can agree or disagree. He's been alot more physical this year but he's been having issue's with controlling the puck. It seems like he is losing the puck more this season. This wasn't an issue in preseason but seems to be a problem right now. Also it seems like before he wouldn't really lose battles racing for the puck but he seems like he's not moving his feet as much either. I'm just hoping he doesn't fall into that dreaded sophmore slump.

In his defense, some of those goals were odd bounces but yeah, he hasn't been the shining Calder winner so ar this season.

He had 0 turnovers last game, for the record. He needs to keep working on his skating and puck-handling and he'll be fine.

Just because you have zero turnovers doesn't mean you can leave Marian Hossa absolutely undefended by your own blue line.

There were a few times the past couple of games where he looked uncoordinated. He hasn't looked really bad, but he doesn't look like the guy who won the Calder last season.

Don't forget how good he was in the first game against Ottawa... The team as a whole needs to collectively get it together.

My feelings during last night's game were as follows. I found myself thinking Myers has changed his game to become more offense-minded. i think the fact that everyone talks about his 48 points last year and not his defensive responsibility is starting to take its toll on his game. I think he's starting to look for opportunities to pinch, join a rush, or stick-handle with the puck at times where he would have kept his defensive positioning at the same point in the season last year. He tries to pinch in the opponents' zone, and then he isn't in the right place to keep the puck in and it squirts down the ice and, presto, chance is over. He tries to make a fancy skating play in his own zone instead of making a simple pass to his partner and he ends up falling and coughing up the puck for a point-blank shot.

Hope I'm wrong, but I think he's starting to buy into his own hype, and that makes him try to do too much. He needs to keep it simple.

I think this sentiment has some value to it. I'm in the same boat as you on this one.

All Hossa did last night was cherry pick though, it looked like a skate n' shoot or something. If we could effectively control the puck as a team we wouldn't have to worry too much about that stuff because a goal hanger puts a team at a disadvantage defensively. Further more, Niedermayer was getting held on the play on that breakout pass and no penalty was called. It was very blatant and no call came. That's why Chicago got the puck.

Hossa's cherry picking was not Myers' fault.

The Sabres bench should have been screaming about the fact that he had gotten in behind them.

Exactly. Why do fans have such short term memories? Couple that with a knee jerk "Fuck We're Doooooomed!" reaction each time the team plays sub par hockey and we have these bipolar mood swing threads every other game. The mob is either raising players up on their shoulders or grabbing their pitch forks around here. Especially funny after just a few games. Myers has looked a bit off the last two games.....what does that mean? Maybe we should all take a collective smoke break and wait until we have enough of the season behind us to get a good idea of what kind of team we have this year. There are 79 more games. Just saying.

I have to question why its a "Fuck We're Dooooomed!" label you slap on fans who express their opinions either individually or collectively on some of the concerns on individual players performances or collectively, as a team.

Why are those who point out some more than obvious problems with the team in an attempt to discuss them labeled as having bipolar mood swings?

To express an opinion and discuss it with others no matter what angle on any given issue is taken, its still a subject to be discussed. Why do I need a smoke break?

I am well aware there are 79 games remaining, and pointing out what I see as the product on the ice from my point of view is no more, or less, discussion worthy than the positives that are to be pointed out. And right now, aside from Roy, Leopold and Ennis, there aren't many positives. So, are you suggesting we should not discuss the Sabres shortcomings or ineptness in certain areas of their game play?

My position on this is simple.

The Sabres have played 180 minutes of hockey out of close to 5000 they will play this year. They have not played enough hockey for certain conclusions to be made.

Reasonable : "The defense looks a little shaky right now."
Unreasonable : "Defense sucks ass."

Reasonable : "Vanek really looks like he's fighting it. You'd hope he would bury some of his chances, he's had plenty."
Unreasonable : "Vanek is worthless."

Reasonable : "Miller doesn't look like himself. Wasn't really tested in Ottawa, and it doesn't seem like him to lay down back to bank stinkers, especially at home."
Unreasonable : "Miller is not to be blamed, but WTF? You want a legacy, try building one. One great season does not a champion make."

I don't mean to pick on your comments only, but they were quicker to find.

It's one thing to express some concern over the last couple games. It's quite another to lay down blanket generalizations based on such a small sample size. That's what is driving me, and others, bonkers.

I'd suggest not pointing fingers at things like Myers, or Miller looking bad, because they're not common.

Our powerplay shitting the bed? Complain away. Players getting cutesy? Complain away. Those are carryovers from last year.

I don't think we can shit on new problems until the organization has a chance to correct them.

Would you relax? Your post in another thread flat out said that Vanek, Connolly and Miller suck....all based on two lost games mind you. You, like many fans take in a bad game and instantly start screaming that the sky is falling and that our team sucks. What I am saying is that two lost games is not enough to draw the types on conclusions that are being thrown around as to players sucking etc. It has been three games. I have not suggested and will not suggest that we not "discuss" the teams problems. Let's do it with a fucking dash of perspective and context though. There is a huge difference between worrying and discussing a couple losses and saying:
Quote:
Defense sucks ass.
Power Play is non-existent.
Vanek is worthless.
Connolly is the same.
Miller is not to be blamed, but WTF? You want a legacy, try building one. One great season does not a champion make.

Got ya Squanto, my comments are short and to the point, maybe a disclaimer in my sig denoting that "the opinions are only of the already played games and in no way reflect the remainder of the season" should be added to help dispell certain "up in arms" thoughts. :D

I'm just short and to the point on what I've seen so far, but I also firmly believe this is the year we win it all.
