I've read about an interesting statistic today. Since 2005/2006 Vanek appears to be the most efficient goal scorer in the NHL (only considering players with 1000+ shots).

For example:

Vanek 1351 sog, 212 goals, 15.7%
Ovi 2559 sog, 306 goals, 12%
Perry 1368 sog, 172 goals, 12.6%

I was quite surprised, I've always thought Vanek misses way too many opportunities.

Pominville is actually 11.5 percent on his efficiency.

11.5 isn't good anyway.

Vanek obviously has some amazing goal scoring stats but the numbers here may be skewed a tiny bit.

1. Vanek is an inside the paint type of shooter. Ovie and perry do that as well but take a lot more shots from the outside. It's like comparing dunks between a center and a point guard.

2. Total shots might be slightly different. I know Ovie misses a lot of shots as well and I'm too lazy to look this up but the stat above listed is just shots on goal.

Either way, I'd rather have Vanek over Perry.

Shots on goal are the only shots that are counted...

Yeah I compared that to a lot of other shooters on the team and basically all scoring players were ahead of him. My bad.

He has 13 points on the season. I'm not exactly complaining about him this season.

Vanek is the mother fucking league MVP so far this season. FTW. 34 Sabres goals 17 Vanek points? 50% of the teams offense AND THEN SOME?! Fuck kessel.

?

There is a shots column under stats in the NHL. It does not mean shots on goal or anything, it just means total shots.

Either way, just an observation.

A shot isn't counted unless it either hits the goalie in front of the net or it goes in.

Someone posted this exact same thread at the Sabres boards. That's pretty amusing.

Oh, ok. I haven't visited the old boards ever since they turned to shit. Maybe this guy read the same article I did.

EDIT: holy shit, I just looked over there. It's really the exact same thread. Someone just copied it. Weird.

Exactly, and yeah. I've been back a lot lately. I don't mind it over there other than the complete lack of modding due to webmaster not giving any fucks.

I'm rehashing Vanek Fanatic.

Only Shots the goalie has to save are counted as shots on goal. So only shots a player shoots on goal are counted.

If a shot hits the post or crossbar, I don't think it's counted as a shot since the goalie didn't save it also.

I was referring to the assumed total of shots on goal + missed shots = Total amount of shots taken.

I don't know how accurate the NHL records it, but it's definitely a stat.

If you shoot at the net you're going to miss, it happens.

Shooting percentage is still only SOG anyways.

shots and shots on goal are 2 different things. a shot on goal is a shot that results in either a save or a goal. a shot is just any puck put on net (regardless of it being deflected, wide, whatever). as far as i know the NHL doesnt track this specific stat.
