http://www.askmen.com/sports/business_1 ... iness.html This isn't updated to this current CBA, but the old NHL Pension plan, you couldn't live off of it after you retired

So, when you retire, at 32 years old, get a friggin' job...with a pension. Or take all that money and start a business.IRA's. CD's... etc.... all count

So at 32 without any sort of degree you expect them to just magically get a job making at least 50K to support a family?

Most of the players that argued over the pension where the guys who didn't make millions a year, who have only 5 years of playing time before they are no longer NHL players. Those superstars making 100 million over the duration of their contract aren't the ones complaining about a pension, it's the other 90% of the NHL players that were.

Better idea then. At 32, go back to school and get that degree. A lot of people do that, at all ages, with less financial backing

I think this is the bottom line that everyone can agree on. If you squander a couple million, no one should have to feel sorry for you(not even MC Hammer).

Also, if 50k is shit, then I'll gladly accept a raise to the shit salary, please. I'm assuming their wives also aren't inclined to bring in any income, either??

No shit. I been living just fine on 20k for the last few years, raising a family with 2 kids) working to start my own business, which is looking to be very lucrative (finally) this year. 50k?? I never made 50K in my life, even when I was driving a truck OTR @ 120,000 miles a year.

Again, B&Y...why do you question how they manage their money? Did anything tip you off that across the NHL most players are irresponsible math-tards that overspend "wildly" causing themselves to "go poor"? They want pensions....I'm not them....where is the reason I should be pissed? I seem to be missing it. Also, since the bulk of NHL players make under 1 million a year, why use the "mansion" owning Roy as an example who will make 5.5 million this year and who has made 24 million over his pro career? And...most of them have mansions? Mansions?

Because 700K times 8 years = 5.6 MILLION dollars. How many people don't make that in an entire lifetime of working, and buy a nice house, send the kids to school, own nice vehicles, go on vacations, etc.....?

Players do not take "no risk whatsoever". They are the ones whose physical lives are on the line. They are they ones who could quite possibly end up with a broken-down body in their old age. They are the ones who might commit suicide or OD. They also don't all make it to the NHL, and many who do barely ever see much money. So the players have both their physical and financial lives on the line. On the other hand the owners risk only their money, and I'd guess pretty much all of them have money to spare or they'd never own a hockey team in the first place. It's just patently untrue that the owners have "more" at risk if you ask me.

Well, first, we'[re talking about the NHL, not the minors and 2nd, I don't see a whole lot of Lyle Alzedo (Google him if you're under 35) stories from Hockey Players. Hell, I know a fair amount of ex-NHL'ers, from living in Amherst and very few are suffering the debilitating, life long injuries that football players suffer from. Must be a reason why so many 60 & 70 year olds play those NHL Alumni games

"I don't personally know any former NHL players that have significant injuries, therefore it must be true that no former NHL players have significant injuries."

Completely moronic.

Since this discussion revolves around a different league I don't think it does.
For a player to be eligible for the NHL pension they have to play at least 400 games (read multiple seasons) at big boy wages.

Actually that 400 game number is what they fought over, or at least everything I've read. They said that because some of the players never play that many games so they argued over it to get reduced or something.

It's hard to know right now, because as far as I know, the CBA hasn't been released in it's final form yet for us to read yet?

You might want to try a little more reading comprehension. I said very few of the ones I know. Hoe do you get that no former NHL players have significant injurioes?

IT's ok, you can feel stupid now

He paraphrased but you did say you didn't know any and then inferred injuries aren't a big problem in the NHL. That is how I took your post too.

Nothing you say can make feel stupid. Because I'm not.

Good day.

Unless he changed it, I don't see him saying all former NHLers.
