I think that a lot of us downplay the olympics because we see a Stanley Cup as being more prestigious than a Gold Medal, especially in a small market such as Buffalo.

another factor is the blood, sweat, and tears. an NHL season starts in mid september, and ends, for the lucky, in early june. the olympics begin on a friday, and commence two fridays later. you are with the team 2 whole weeks! an NHL team, 9 months, and thats only one season. for others, its a 20 year career.

tell me this: does seeing hasek clutch his gold medal in 98 pull at your heartstrings, or seeing ray bourque euphoric the moment he touches the cup in 2001? im going to go with the latter.

I would take the Sabres winning the Stanley Cup over any of the team members winning gold medals any day of the week, but that doesn't mean that I don't like watching NHLers compete in the Olympics. It's still a huge honor for them and I'm glad to see them there. But I am a Sabres fan first and foremost, so of course I would rather see the team win a Cup.

I personally enjoyed both moments. I can't quantify that I liked one better than the other, I just liked both. Seeing players take time out of the professional careers to try and win one for their country appeals to me.

well, thats fair to me. im not for or against, just wish provisions were written into contracts. its scary that im thinking about the business aspect of the game.

i, personally, to me, think the bourque moment was especially bittersweet. you have bourque on one end the spectrum, winning his first cup, and JS giguere, holding his conn smyth trophy, while crying because he was so heartbroken over not winning the cup (reports surfaced later that he was depressed because he was so heartbroken over not winning the cup, well into the 03-04 season.)

The latter for sure.

But remember, Bourque had said before hand that this would be his last season, so the build up and hype was naturally more intriguing.

BINGO!

It is a business and an injury can have a significant impact on how much $$$ the team makes. (Think: Miller not injured last year = lucrative playoff rounds).

Works for me also, since the contract isn't being fulfilled then.

I'm kinda playing this one 50/50.

I hope Lindy picks up a few tips from the other coaches at these games to help lead our Sabres into the playoffs.

If it means we'll go deep into the playoffs on the winning heals of a gold medal with Miller in the net and it gives him some added swagger coming back to Buffalo, then I want the USA to win gold in mens hockey.

By default, I have to go for my home country, Canada. Urgh, this is going to be tough! :?

Going forward, I don't want the NHL sending players to the games. It makes it too god damn hard to pick what team/country you cheer for because of the NHL standings!

Well when Ruff met with the coaches of the Candian team he picked up some of their ideas and is using them already, I remember reading plenty of articles about this early in the season.

Yes.

But; I'd rather see them all in The Stanley Cup Final.

Oddly enough, out of all the US cities I've been too, Buffalo really feels like an extension of home for me. The people are great, awesome sights to see, and amazing food! I can't wait for the 2nd week of March and our trip back to Buffalo! This is going to be a whole lot of awesome! :D
