tampa bay will keep a team below the sabres, but could climb down for another game. the rangers are currently in 9th, tied for points with the isles, but 2 games in hand. 1 game in hand after tonight.
carolina did not help the sabres, and a win by the thrashers leaves the thrashers one point behind the sabres at the 7 seed.

create a gap between those teams and the sabres.
