EDIT: I thought, in the spirit of new years, it'd be fun to revisit some threads that were posted before this season began to realistically look at how our expectations have changed as this season has progressed.

Most notable to me, was the Henrik Tallinder discussion. He went from being considered the scum of the Sabres, to an important part of a top defensive pairing.

Good for him. I'm glad he did it.

Tallinder Trying To Revive Career

Quote:
For the first time in the past five seasons, Henrik Tallinder finished the year in the red. His plus-minus was a negative two. And going into this year, there is a growing sentiment that the Sabres blue line would better off without the veteran Swede.

But after watching practice Tuesday, Tallinder isn’t acting like a player who believes his job is in jeopardy. His laughs and jokes with teammates were audible from the stands.

“We have two difficult years behind us. You have to look forward now,” said Tallinder. “This is going to be a good season so you have to attitude where you feel relaxed. It’s a good thing when you smiles and people are happy out there. It’s a relaxed atmosphere.”

Tallinder firmly believes that having an austere approach to hockey is what has ruined him. He’s no longer treating his job like a matter of life and death.

“It was a tough break when my shoulder got dislocated. Maybe I was trying a little too hard for the first part of the season. I wasn’t really relaxed. I don’t think you can play at your best when you’re not relaxed. At the end I started to pick it up a little bit.”

Besides his mental state, Tallinder’s ancillary concern should be his health. Last year, it was a separted shoulder. Before that, it was a broken arm. He would be remiss if he didn’t believe that the injuries haven’t made him a different player.

“Every injury is tough. I would like to say that I am the same player, it’s the same me, obviously whether you want it or not, it’s going to affect you. I was brought here for one reason, to play defense. I know what I can do here. I just need to prove it.”

Tallinder’s objectives in 2009-2010 are clear.

“I want to prove everyone I can play better than I have. A couple of seasons were not going so great…. One of my goals is to be a top four defensemen. I want to improve offensively and defensively. I’m looking forward to this season. It’s going to be fun. I have a really more positive attitude than I’ve had in years.”
He’d surprise a lot of Sabres fans if he lived up to that promise.

Practice Notes…The players are still split off into three groups, with one practicing, and the other two scrimmaging. Tuesday’s players who practiced included Tallinder, Toni Lydman, Ryan Miller, Jason Pominville, Tyler Myers, and Mike Grier…Much of today’s practice drills involved 3-on-2s and other odd man rush situations. Also there was a series of breakaway drills.

If Tallinder was the player he was in 05-06...

I hope he can "return to form." Any improvement over the last 3 years would be greatly appreciated. We have too many young guns who are hungry for a shot to waste on a veteran nose diving from mediocrity.

Pussy. Cut him, cut him hard, and cut him now. Send Hecht packing with him...these two fairies were made for each other.

The bad news is, he seems to have lost his drive to play the game; so improvement is unlikely.

The good news is, he can't get any worse........

The one thing with Hamk and Lydman is that both are in contract years. They both should play their best hockey ever, b/c this is likely the last chance they have to land 1 more big contract. Most d-men are at their best when they hit their 30's and Hank and Lydman are 30 and 31 respectively. I wouldn't mind clearing cap space, but we need to make a few moves for it to help. A 1 for 1 trade won't help the log jam we have up front or on the D.

I think moral is a big part of what's been chewing up the Sabres for the last couple years and if the new team chemistry is good than a lot is possible. That being said, we'll have to wait and see.

I was thinking. At least Hank is saying that he wants to get better, but where is Hecht? He has the worst season of anyone on the team last season, and he doesn't have anything to say about it. I haven't seen any interviews or read any articles stating that he's had a bad season and would like to improve this year. It would be nice to know if he wants to continue to play competivly in the NHL or just go back to Europe.

Reality is what you believe to be true. You all believe that Tallinder has "lost it" and is a mere shell of the player he once was. So you've elevated that belief to an almost dogmatic truth that cannot be questioned in your minds. I can understand that.

On the other hand, we're talking about a player who I felt was Buffalo's best player in the years that they've had their greatest success of late. To me, he's shown that he has an ability that probably indicates he has a better understanding of hockey than I or any of you have, and he believes he can return to form.

Since I think he knows more about hockey and himself than I do, I'll defer to what he believes to be true. Sure, it may just be wishful thinking on his part, but who am I to judge on that front? And no offense, but I hope what he believes to be true turns out closer to reality than what most of you believe to be true.

Swedish defensemen aren't really the sandpaper type to begin with.
