I don't think there is any question that Patty Kaleta was playing the best hockey of his career before getting injured. Scoring goals, playing great defense, hitting, hustling, killing penalties...Shit, Ruff even put him on the powerplay a couple times.
Then, boom!, he goes down twice. First with a concussion/neck injury, and then again somewhere on his lower body right after he returns to the lineup. All the reports said Kaleta was ready to play again against Toronto, but Ruff decided to sit him out anyway suggesting he needed to get "more practice". Then he was held out of the Avs game as a healthy scratch, because Ruff didn't want to mess with the chemistry of a 6 game winning streak.
Now, after losing to the Avs and getting ready for a critical road trip, Lindy is still threatening to keep Kaleta on the bench until a roster spot opens. While there is no question our 4th liners have been playing some damn solid hockey in his absence, there is no question that Pat brings more game to the table than Ellis and Mair combined. He's a bigger hitter, draws more penalties, skates faster, scores more goals, and may be our best penalty killer.
Therefore, if he is in fact in the doghouse the question is why? Is it because Lindy is sick of the injuries and wants to teach him a lesson about staying in the lineup? Is it because he took a couple foolish penalties in his last game against St. Louis and Ruff wants him to understand that there's a difference between being an agitator and playing reckless?
All of the above?
Whatever it may be, I suspect Kaleta will be back sooner rather than later, and Lindy is probably making sure he understands that he needs to take his game to the next level, from "energy player" and "petty agitator" to serious contributor with maturity who knows when to turn it on and when to turn it off.
If Pat is smart, he will learn the lessons Lindy is trying to teach him right now. I don't think Kaleta himself yet fully realizes just how much upside his game has if he's smart enough to harness it.
