BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Sabres defenceman Marc-Andre Gragnani will miss four-to-six weeks with a sprained knee.

Coach Lindy Ruff provided the update Saturday a day after Gragnani was hurt in rookie scrimmage. Ruff didn't say which knee was injured, but noted it won't require surgery.

Gragnani, the Sabres' third-round pick in the 2005 draft, was expected to compete for a regular job with the team this season. He's previously appeared in six career games with Buffalo, but has yet to register a point.

Forward Mark Parrish, an 11-year NHL veteran, joined the Sabres in opening training camp on a tryout basis. A six-time 20-goal-scorer, he had two assists in 16 games with Tampa Bay last season.

Parrish for depth in Portland, I assume..

He'll be in Buffalo sooner than later though I bet if our PP tanks we'll see him called up in mid December.

He wasn't the only one. Monty took a puck to the knee in drills and was limping for a bit, but he came back after about 10 mins.

I didn't see Grag's injury, I think Phil did though.

I didn't know Mark Parrish was still in the league

Touch break for grags, hockey injuries hqppen for a reason, but never a good reason.

Parish is unforgivable slow, there's no way he can keep up with the Sabres NHL club, but he could be somebody to look up too for the AHL guys.

mark parrish has a twisted shot. hes lead the league in shooting percentage several times, i think. i seriously believe that if given a shot, he could still be a 20 goal scorer.

He does have a great shot, but he's nothing close to the player he once was. He really hasn't been the same since he left the island.

He'd be a great mentor, maybe a good fill in/call up player, but that's about it.

Neither has Jason Blake

The NHl is steadily leaving behind the slow footed wingers. When you aren't blessed with wheels, you learn how to use what's between your ears really well, as Parish did. He reads the play at a high level, times his actions, and takes advantage of his oppertunities. Even on his best day I would fall short of callign his shot overpowering or wicked, but he does make the most out of his chances and that's nto something every player can learn.

The problem with Parish is that he's simply not a good fit with the Sabres NHL squad. They don't need guys that are waiting for chances, they need scoring line forwards that are tough to play against in all three zones. They need guys who have touch around the net but are willing (and GOOD AT) digging pucks out of the corner, wining 1 on 1 battles along the boards, and having the NHL speed needed to enforce somehting of a backcheck.

The Cheechoo's, Parish's, and Ouellette's can't keep up in today's game.

I've seen him shoot the puck, it's nothing earth shattering. And if I'm not mistaken he once lost control of a puck at the blueline during a penalty shot. lol

Of all the stats out there, I don't think shooting % tell you the entire story about a player.

Gretzky had a career SH% of 17.6%. Parrish is close to that, but nobody would ever accuse him of being in the same league.

of course not. but when he gets the puck, he buries it. i dont know just how accurate it is, or how hard it is, or even how quickly he gets it off. but hes a 20 goal scorer, and a 30 goal scorer. so he does something right.

To be fair, he's only hit 30 once, and that was a lifetime ago back in 01-02.

Here's some food for thought. I put together some stats for Parrish's last 3 full NHL seasons, and compared them to a player already on the Sabres roster.

Player #1
GP 214
G 50
A 67
PTS 117

Player #2
GP 218
G 64
A 54
PTS 118

One of these players had an avg SH% of 11.37% , the other was 17.02%. Point production was virtually identical, as you can see. They are both right wingers. Who is who? (No cheating!!)

Player #1 is Drew Stafford
Player #2 is Mark Parrish

parrish doesnt shoot enough. thats how i always felt.

if parrish signed on and was an extra forward, id gladly take it, because he has a nose for the net.

That might be true, however the fact is that even with his higher shooting percentage, the production is the same as the other player who I compared him to, who most of us agree is a a bust and want out of here.

Unless he played a more physical game or provided something else that player can't, I don't see the point of having him on the roster. He's not a young guy, and he's not just going to magically start shooting more to drive those numbers up.

I don't hate Parrish, I just don't see him as any real upgrade on this roster at this point in his career.
