What are the pros and cons (if any) in the team being sold?

Will all this talk have a positive or negative effect on the team's current play?

Are you hoping for a front office clean-out, or is there anyone salvageable?

Ultimately, HOW can this be a BAD thing?

PRO: This guy is not just a big hockey fan, but a Sabres fan to boot. He's got the resources to make shit happen. Most importantly, he likely won't be an absentee owner.

CON: He may micromanage and not know what-the-fuck he's doing. That's never pretty.

I think you kind of hit the biggest pro's and con's, but I think this discussion could be carried out in the "ZOMG the Sabres might be sold" thread.

The guy is obviously an philanthropist.

Golisano's biggest fault has been his failure to hold management to standards.

Will this guy have the stones to step up and hold Darcy and Larry to standards, or will he let them do their thing because he's a generous, patient guy?

gotta think if the teams sold, the new owner will bring in his own guys, from a GM to a coach. darcy and lindy would likely be gone. shoot, may even fire RJ. it happened here in detroit.

If he is a Sabres fan there is no way he would get rid of RJ.

Honestly, if he buys the team, the only thing I would really want to see him do is to strip LQ of any hockey operations title and let Regier have free reign over this team and get Lindy who he needs for the team.

That's it, because I don't think there is a GM out there I would trust right now to do any better of a job, unless you promote Ruff to GM and find a new head coach for the team.

I dare say that if this sale is legit and goes through, once all the dust settles and he's sitting in his owner’s box, I think this is exactly what will happen, with the exception of the whole letting R.J. go thing. Hell for all we know, if this is actually happening, he may very well be selecting a new front office and bench bosses as we speak so he walks in with a clean canvas!

God damn this is better than the off-season UFA period! :D

There isn't any reason why they would fire RJ. The announcer position has zero to do with the team's performance on the ice. RJ has this job until he doesn't want it anymore. End of story with that nonsense.

I'd imagine that a new owner would look to get a new GM, and that GM would probably want their own coach. Who knows though. Too early to tell.

youd be surprised. they fired harwell here, and harwell is.. well, legend doesnt do the guy justice.. when illitch bought the team, they brought him back. obviously probably wont happen. but goes to show when a new owner/president wants his own guys, theyll do ANYTHING.

Mike has a point. If a new owner wants something or someone specific, well, they’d get what they want because they’re the owner. I would like to think that he’d understand the fans would likely burn HSBC arena to the ground as the fans have almost the same, if not more loyalty to R.J. as they do to this team. Still, I'd be absolutely shocked if it ever happened.

I will say this; If the day comes and R.J. & Co. are relieved of their duties and I hear the bastards from VS or Comcast who call the games for the Crapitals behind the microphones, good guy or not I'll choke the bastard myself!

Harwell wasn't fired. His contract wasn't renewed. There's a difference.

If the guys is a Sabres fan, he's not firing RJ. End of story.

holy shit, talking about flying off the handles. i merely suggested it as an example of how new owners bring in their own guys, and sometimes that extends into areas youd never guess. re-fucking-lax.

there is only one hockey announcer i like over RJ: gary thorne. so if that was the case, id be ok with it. just goes to show, some owners/presidents will do ANYTHING to get their guys in there. crazy stuff, eh? rarity indeed, however.

Exactly.

And the guy is a Sabres fan... why would he completely dismantle one of the most solid coaching/GM tandems there is... this team under Darcy and Ruff have been extremely successful under 3 owners, bankruptcy, NHL owned, small market nonsense... Quinn has Darcy handcuffed... you strip Quinn of any power, even better if you can buy him out...

If he is a Sabres fan he will see the tradition, leadership, and hockey knowledge Darcy and Ruff bring... If I bought the Sabres, Id take the cuffs off Darcy and ask him point blank, what do we honestly need to do to have a cup in buffalo in the next 2 years... free agents, scouts, front office help, coaching help, etc...

NOW, here is my question. If Tommy G and Quinn impose their budgets because of profit issues... and new guy steps in and pays a bit more than Tommy paid for the team, how will he be able to spend more money on talent and the franchise and turn a profit, if Tommy is having a harder time turning a profit and the bargain price he got the team for?

Being a fan is one thing... running your business in the red is another....

well, its suggested lindy has lost the team. i like lindy alot, but when results arnt there... warm, fuzzy nostalgia wont get ya two points. darcy is darcy. been around a long time, built some great teams. but when the team is losing, its a reflection. shoot, these two may not be around to see an ownership change anyways.

but of course, who is going to replace these two? i often see fans who want these guys gone.. well, whose gonna replace them?
