Who decided this discussion was ONLY about what the situation was entering the playoffs? All this talk is basically about how "the Sabres would be much better if...."
The point is, Boston would be helped tremendously by having their star center back. He's one of the top assist men in the lague. How could you deny that? He's on the payroll and was lost in just the past month.
Enough of this "woe is the Sabres" excuse making. This attitude is even less valid when comparing to Boston, since they have suffered more health problems this year than almost any team in the league.
If both teams were completely healthy, I suspect the series would be EXACTLY where it is right now.
The Savard issue came up when you responded to a statement I made about how this series is going. Savard has nothing to do with THIS SERIES. I don't deny that Savard would be a big help, but he was/is a complete non-issue for this series.
I'm not making excuses, what I'm doing is explaining the disadvantages the Sabres are currently having to adjust to in mid-series. Boston has already had the time to adjust for the loss of Savard, and since then have gotten healthier. Some people simply respond with tough sounding worn out stuff that basically amounts to, "they have to suck it up". Ennis and Kennedy can't all of a sudden suck it up and stop making rookie mistakes. Nobody can suck it up and somehow become as talented and as hot as Vanek was, or bring Hecht's two-way game to the ice. Connolly can't somehow call Mr. Miagi to put his healing hands over his foot and bring his mobility back. The whole roster can't all of a sudden excel at a clutch and grab type of game when they were never that type of team.
These aren't excuses, these are reasons. Just because I'm detailing them doesn't mean I think Buffalo is somehow better than they are. I had them as very slight favorites before game one. Once I knew Hecht and Stafford were out I had it even. Once I saw that Connolly was definitely still hurting, Vanek went down, and the officiating was going to allow so much I had them as severe underdogs. Some people want to say, "suck it up". I'm saying that just isn't going to make a difference because there is too much for Buffalo to overcome. If they were a better team with better players they'd have a better chance. They don't, there's no time for important players to return and make a difference, and they'll lose in five or six games. See ya in October.
