I think that the word ("diary") has come to be associated with a set of feminine traits - In the context of what he does (it really shouldn't matter, but) one would typically refer to it as a "journal" or "log" or (as you mentioned) "blog"...

It's a subtle differentiation; as in "a shirt" and "a blouse"...

Just a bit of silliness. Don't take it to heart. :D

Actually, to be gay could help his game. Maybe the defenders wouldn't be so palpable in front of the net or at least he would enjoy it more :)

No Gay, only Hecht and Tallinder are because they swing their purses around at others.

Dear Diary,
Today Lindy yelled at me. It made my heart feel sad. Also Gaustad has gotten annoying. He's started "goosing" people in the lockeroom and honking. It's made everyone very comfortable. Except for Derek Roy. Today we went for a BBQ to Tallinder's house. It was pink with yellow daisies painted on the windows. Then Numminen showed up. He muttered "damn kids," and some incomprehensible Finnish slang before proceeding to relieve himself in his pants while in line for a burger. Ahh what a day.

Thomas "terrific skivvies" Vanek.

The last few years, this is almost exactly how I imagined Vanek.

Hope he lives up the the "throwing the body" thing he says he is working on.
