I hate to be an ass, but has ANYONE on this roster proven they can handle first pair minutes? I don't know much about Leo, and I'm not sure about Rivet. Certainly not anyone else we have.
They do have this kid named Myers, he won some award or something a couple of weeks ago, and he played more than 23 minutes a game.
Last year Leopold logged over 22 minutes a game for the Penguins and Panthers, He's not going to win the Norris this year, but he does bring a good all around game. He's a good penalty killer, power play point man, and he's very reliable at even strength. In my opinion he's a slight improvement over Tallinder who went on to make more money elsewhere.
Butler was less than stellar playing 20 minutes a game for the Sabres last season, but he's only entering his 3rd NHL season so there's reason to suggest that he could become a more consistent performer for the Sabres if he plays 20+ minutes again. Definite question mark.
Montador is a reliable and experienced defender who is well conditioned to playing 15-17 ESM/game. His lack of special team contributions keeps his overall ice-time way down. You have to go back to 05-06 when he logged any significant amount of penalty killing time, but another :30 seconds or so on average probably wont make or break the season. He could become more of a regular on the second power play unit now as well. 20+ minutes might be a stretch for a player of Montador's talents, but this upcoming season is a contract year for the 30 year old and I'm sure he would welcome the added responsibilities to show that he is worth a more lucrative contract. The only question is whether or not he will make the most convincing argument to Lindy Ruff.
