They did this, so that we can trade Vanek for a 6th round pick...*nod* makes perfect sense

Ellis is now the 14th forward. Odds have to be good that Gerbe starts in Portland now.

Not if he stars in the pre-season. Sabres will find a way to keep him if he shines in camp. If he doesn't shine in camp, then what exactly has Gerbe done to make anyone believe he should be sniffing an NHL roster?

Gerbe, Ennis and Butler are the prime candidates for Portland because they're on 2 way deals. We'll see about Ellis, but I'm guessing he got a 1 way league minimum. Ennis has done too much already to be sent down, that leaves Butler and Gerbe.

I think they feel comfortable sending Gerbe down and leaving Butler in the press box.

Meh is about how I feel about Matt Ellis. I know every team needs fourth liners, but Ellis doesn't excite me in any way. If you're going to get bottom line minutes, shouldn't you at least fight or be a physical presence or something?

Random question but with so many forwards being loaded up is there a chance that Darcy may have a trade up his sleave? Just wondering. Nothing huge or earth shattering but just a way to dump some salary or dump a forward or two.

Nope.

Thanks Darcy.

So you think a trade is really going to happen?

Ellis is a nice player to have around if somebody gets hurt. He gives 100%, and for the league minimum (probably), I have no problem with him coming back. His "surprise" goal in Game 2 was awesome, btw..

The venerable Cap Geek has Matt Ellis' contract numbers: one-year, two-way deal worth $105K in Portland (which is where he is assumed to start IMO) and $625K in Buffalo.

If this is right, then it's an awesome deal for us. Ellis is quality depth who's familiar. Another good move by Regier(did I just say that).

Nope.

Vanek-Roy-Stafford
Ennis-Connolly-Pominville
Hecht-Niedermayer-Grier
McCormick-Goose-Kaleta

No room for Gerbe or Ennis Ellis.

Just because McCormick played great physical hockey for us in the playoffs doesn't mean he'll earn a roster spot out of camp.

The playoffs tend to bring out the best in players. We saw it with our Rochester Americans defense in the ECF in 2006.

I fully expect to see Gerbe in a Sabres uniform right from the get go this fall.

McCormick would be paid $500k in the AHL. Gerbe would be paid $62.5k.

Gerbe isn't good enough to break the top 2 lines, and it's a waste to put him on the bottom two. He'll be in Portland.

I was never impressed with Gerbe. I feel for the kid, if I were in his tiny shoes I'd be kinda ticked.
