I see things differently dsabres06. What I see from the team is many players trying to be creative with the puck instead of making safe and simple plays, and that attempt at creativity causing turnovers and breakaways. I see a lot of skating with the puck. I see a lot of passes through the middle of the ice in their own zone. I see players trying to make drop passes at the blueline. I see players blindly throwing the puck in front of the net to no one when they have it behind the opposition's goal. Granted I don't see all of that from Ennis, but he definitely is skating with the puck and trying to stick-handle around defenders a lot. Maybe he has the skill to get away with it, but most of the team doesn't.
Alright well I certainly agree that the drop pass at the blueline is godawful, but I'm talking about creative play that actually has a positive effect sometimes. A lot of the plays the Sabres make are very simple and "safe". Too simple to fool any defenders. I bet they're pretty predictable.
I also agree that most of the team doesn't have the skill set to do what Ennis does, but guys like Vanek, Stafford, Connolly, and Pominville all
should. They've shown it in the past, but they don't now. Remember Stafford's beautiful goal against Justin Pogge? I haven't even seen him try that move since. I don't know why. Maybe it was because he was less into his rock band back then (I kid). It's not about doing things individually, it's about taking care of what you can individually to put the team in a better position to score.
And as a side note, the problem of not having a clutch goal scorer wouldn't be a problem if we had ways to score consistently. Tampa Bay has their one-timer passing plays, Detroit has their deflections; Buffalo has Roy and Vanek batting the puck out of the air every once in a while.
