First, making the playoffs is a pipe dream and nobody in the front office should be bothering with the lame rah-rah talk by now. Second, I guess I know what Darcy meant, but "fun" is about the oddest way to characterize the predicament they are in right now. It's really just a propaganda version of saying, "we're going to sit on our tight wad hands and let the AHL guys get playing time".

I'm actually fine with that in this instance. I would never want to see Ruff or the players trying to lose on purpose, but with a season so unpromising they may as well get a top five pick (if anyone there can actually cash in with a good selection).

Pavelec is having an All-Star season, they've got the best offensive d-man in the league right now, and much of their forward corps are starting to click finally. Unless all of this falls apart at the seams, Atlanta is at least seeing a playoff berth. Dealing Kovalchuk, picking up some good players from Chicago and having their young talent finally reaching a good level all at the same time has made them a much better team than a year ago.

They need a 5-7 game winning streak just to get back into contention for a playoff spot. Teams like Atlanta and Tamp Bay are hungrier than Buffalo, and teams like New York and Montreal are getting better goal-tending. Nobody is going to roll over so the Sabres can get it.

They don't have to be. They have points position, and with all the 3 point games out there, they don't have to win games to keep their spot. They just have to keep collecting the loser points, and win from time to time.

They've gone to OT 12 times this year, 5 ended up in a shootout. They're feasting on loser points.
