There's no reason a star forward can't lead a team, so I think your logic is a little flawed. That being said, I don't think the Sabres' star forward can do it. He's too much of a head case, and may always be, to be a captain.

Now that's a reason. If they go back to a rotating captaincy I say give him a shot, if he plays like a beast let him keep it.

I would honestly give the C to Pominville, Myers, or Roy before I give it to Vanek.

They all seem more of a leader than Vanek, but I'd give Vanek an A for sure.

I didn't say it's because he's an offensive player. I said HE IS JUST an offensive player. He's lazy at times, and until his hot streak with the REV line he didn't appear much as a team player. He also makes OOPSIES too often, and is very timid. As Phil also said, he's a head case. 2 kids won't help that, either.

Vanek will need to play every game like the win Saturday against the Capitals to make a strong case for captain. He needs to get over being lazy and finish scoring opportunities. He could be among the level of Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin if he does what he is required to do.

Vanek has been one of the hardest working players on the team the entire year. Probably 90% of the games we've played this year, he's been all over the place.

He's been lazy at times this year. Yes, he is the hardest working player on our team this year but all of the other years he still had trouble with laziness.

That's fine, give him the "C"...

And quit on a guy when he's down...

That would really say a lot about the Buffalo Sabres.

And when Vanek goes through another tough stretch, quit on him too...

Let's see how long we can belittle the meaning of the team Captain, maybe eventually it will go to the player who cares the least!

what does it say about the C when we start to turn the season around when rivet is out?

give it to pommers. he hasnt blown up the stats yet this year but he defines a captain to me.

roy/vanek as the home A's
and goose/myers road A's

Roy defines leading by example. Nobody on this team appears to be too vocal.

I would give Vanek the C for these few reasons:

1. He is always striving for perfection. He's not one of those guys that is happy to just do 1 or 2 things right, you can ask him after a game where he scores 2 goals, but makes one bad turn over, and he'll talk more about his turnover than the goals. I think it shows his ability to focus on improvement, more than past success.

2. He's a great lead by example guy. He doesn't get too vocal, but he does what needs to be done on the ice. Works hard on every shift, and has really elevated his game the past 4 games.

3. He's been here a long time, and deserves to be rewarded. He's arguably one of the hardest working guys in the off season, and always is looking to improve his game.

4. (Personal Bias) He's my favorite player, and I'd love to be able to add a C to my Home, and Away jerseys. :)

Dude gets down on himself too much when things aren't going well. You can sense it in his body language on the bench and on the ice. Thomas has his hands full just taking care of himself, let alone anyone else.

But when he gets pissed, he's great!

So basically a different teammate needs to screw his wife every night...

In Vanek's role, hard work is usually shown in goals and assists. Many of us still have problems seeing him do that consistently.

Bench him a couple minutes each game, let him get pissed, then watch him score goals. That is a great idea.

Captain Vanek shows no mercy.

Holy Crap - It's just a stupid piece of cloth sewn onto the front of the jersey, If Vanek truly was a "captain" sorta guy (on & off the ice) he would at least have a permanent 'A' by now dontcha think? If the team wants to follow his leadership they will, regardless of whether there is a 'C' or an 'A' or a goddam :D on his jersey.

Rivet is clearly the best locker-room guy on the team (as he was voted captain by the team when he got here..before ever playing a game), and should remain the captain until the end of the year, unless he is traded or unable to play long term. Changing captains mid-season could cause more harm than good as it may create a divide in the locker room - and we know what happens then...(think Hasek vs. Nolan) The whole team craps out!!!

If Craig isn't coming back any time soon - give it to Jochen or Pommer, and next year pick between the current alternates, as any of them would be good with a 'C', and Vanek can have an 'A' then.

Just remember, It is still only a fabric letter, it is not going to fix the teams struggles, or tell grown men who to listen to.
