The move was made. Who cares why it was made, who ordered it, who didn't order it, whatever.

Ya, you're right, but I will take it as a good omen for sure. I guess I was just pointing out that this was too much of a coincidence, and hopefully more no-brainers are to follow.

I think it bodes well for the theory that Regier was handcuffed by the previous owners. It's a sign that the second he had the chance, he made a move that he couldn't have made before.

Who knows if that's true, but it's a reasonable conclusion I think.

He hasn't even played a full season in the NHL. Let's wait before we crown him our next captain (Or assistant captain).

Did you miss all of last year then?

This is his second full NHL season.

I think he's referring to Weber, who hasn't played a full season in the NHL yet.

Guess I should have read it better. I thought he was responding to my post for some reason.

Everybody wanted him off the team 2 months ago I take it? And they thought Regier was a bad GM for not doing that, but they are wrong. A good GM does exactly what Regier did. If he was in anyway financially restricted he would have waived Rivet 2 months ago and save the owners hundreds of thousands of dollars. Instead they ate his lofty salary for 2 months so they could try and get something for him at the TDL.

It seems fairly obvious that nobody wanted him then or now, but at least they tried. You never know when a team is going to be so decimated with injuries to their blue line that they will risk a 4th or 5th rounder for a rested veteran.

I find it funny that the NHL.com page doesn't have a hint of Buffalo news on it considering everything that has happened in the last two days. You'd think a new owner and a captain being placed on waivers would be note worthy. Plenty of Pitt and Hawks news though. Thought it was for NHL updates.....not a circle jerk for just a few teams. Fuck them.

The morning of the announcement it dominated NHL.com, NHL network, and TSN. In fact, NHL.com had live streaming video for for the pre-show, show, and post-show.

Not at all. Financially, this team can do anything they want now.

Before, waiving Rivet would be stupid, because you'd still owe half of his salary to him. TG didn't want to add payroll. So waiving Rivet would have allowed you to sign a replacement defenseman for the remaining half of the value of his contract.

How is that a good move for the team?

Now, it doesn't matter, because Darcy can spend whatever he wants. As such, goodbye Rivet.

This isn't making any sense to me at all. Maybe I'm missing something, but we're going to pay all of Rivet's contract no matter what(unless someone picks him up; doubtful). The NHL is guaranteed contracts.

Also, we already had (cap)space to make moves. Now that money isn't an issue, it wouldn't matter either way.

Not quite. The Sabres are on the hook for 100% of Rivet's remaining salary UNLESS one of the following things happens.

1. Rivet is claimed on waivers. In that case, the team that picked him up is responsible for 100% of the remaining salary.
2. Rivet clears waivers, and is bought out. In that case, they only owe him the buyout amount split over this year and next.
3. Rivet clears waivers, and is assigned to Portland. He's called back up, and exposed to re-entry waivers. He gets claimed. In that case, the Sabres are only on the hook for 50% of Rivet's salary.

I hope he goes somewhere, poor guy got shuffled out, waived and still had the C. I respect him for dealing with this the way he seems to have handled it.

Ya. That's embarrassing if you ask for a trade, and no one offers anything. Even Mara drew a high rd. pick. Looks like he'll be traded to Portland. Hard to believe him and more so Souray got these contracts, and are rotting in the A(presupposing no one claims him).

I do not like the idea of putting him on waivers, but it is better than doing nothing. He should still be traded.

He couldn't. Nobody wanted him. That was already established.

That sucks, I wonder how he feels? Can he just retire

A trade involved two willing partners. Who would give up something for Rivet? Clearly nobody.
