Seems like a pretty good move by Darcy. Better than the previous moves in previous years. We will just have to see how it pans out. They followed through with what they said, no rentals. I hope there is at least one or two more moves being worked out. TC out the door and another Center.

I'd pay an obscene amount of money to hear RJ say that after he scores

I'm much happier with Boyes for a 2nd rd pick than I ever was with Moore or Torres. Boyes has the talent that those two never had. Like Phil is preaching, he has played RW but is a natural C. Also like Phil said, this can allow Hecht to move back to LW, and take some pressure off Connolly. I'd like to see...

Vanek-Boyes-Stafford
Ennis-Connolly-Pominville
Hecht-Gaustad/Nieds-Grier
McCormick-Gaustad/Nieds-Kaleta

Or sit Nieds and have...

Gerbe-Hecht-Grier
McCormick-Gaustad-Kaleta

This is the scoring depth we need to make a strong push and maybe reach the 6th or 7th spot. Avoiding Philly 1st rd would make anything possible in the playoffs. Unless a better center can still be acquired today, trading Connolly is the wrong move.

In TBN, apparently Darcy has only received one call about Connolly. He's likely not going anywhere unless someone really wants him, which I'd be really surprised if someone steps forward.

As for this deal, I like it. A bit of a gamble but fuck it, I think a change of scenery may do him good and he's got one more year on the books, yes? Not a bad move at all.

Tim Connolly : 8G 18A -11
Jochen Hecht : 10 G 16A +2
Paul Gaustad : 9G 11A +6
Cody McCormick : 8G 9A +5

Explain again to me why we need Connolly?

Get him out of here.

Because he's still better than having Niedermayer on the ice.

Also, if Connolly is so bad (I think he's bad, but not horrible), Boyes is worse this season because his pts/gm is less than Connolly. Scoring depth helps everyone.

That's not saying much. I'm probably better on the ice than Niedermayer.

Taking Connolly off this roster, especially considering that Boyes is probably your new 1st line center, isn't that big a deal. Connolly isn't producing.

Anyone know if he'll join the team in time for Tuesdays game in New York?

See my late edit above, Boyes pts/gm is actually less than Connolly's this year.

Gas - he'll definitely be there.

It would seem reasonable that he'd be in NY. 48 hours is usually plenty of time.

Crap!! I messed up on those stats...Boyes is a little better tha Connolly this year...my bad sorry!

Connolly - 47gms 8g 18a 26 pts
Boyes - 62 gms 12g 29a 41 pts

Still though, scoring depth helps, and like I said, unless another scoring center can be had, why take one step up and one step back? We can replace Connolly with a number of players around the league, but none of them are currently on the Sabres' roster. Again, that's just shuffling players around instead of adding.

That's incorrect.

Boyes : 62 games, 41pts ; .661 PPG
Connolly : 47 games, 26pts; .553 PPG

EDIT: No problem, just saw your post. :)

I agree with your point that scoring depth can't hurt. I just don't see Connolly having any impact on the games now, and don't expect him to have any the rest of the year.

But Roy and Vanek tore it up and inflated their stats in 06-07 because of the depth we had. Obviously it's not the same this season but the concept still applies. Connolly should be a little more effective if he's lining up against a lesser opposing center/line. I also don't expect that much, but it still should help the team.

I'm just not worried about this year. I'm all for dumping crap UFAs like Connolly and getting something to build for the next couple seasons.

But will a 2nd rd pick and maybe a 5th/prospect for Connolly really be that valuable in this year's draft class? I guess it's a coin flip, but I'd rather go for it with all hands on deck in the playoffs. Unless a better C can be acquired today of course...but I kinda doubt it.

You don't always have to use picks at the draft. :)
