Most of us had at least some skepticism of Gerbe after his horrible performance with the Sabres over 10 games last year. This year's preseason wasn't much better. He appeared over-matched and less skilled and fast than originally advertised.

Against the Caps he looked like a new player. Much faster, much better with the puck and in his own end, and seemed for the first time to look like he belonged on an NHL roster.

My thoughts: I'm not sold on Nathan by a long shot, but I feel much better about his chances of making it after that game than before.

What say you?

I think that a good point was made that it seemed like the little guy played more to his strengths this time up. Used his quickness more than trying to use his size, where he's obviously at a disadvantage.

I still worry about his long term NHL prospects because of his size, and I really want to see him in a tough, physical game just to see how he reacts to it.

All in all though, a good performance from the kid.

Reminder how we all said, "Sign him up!!" when Pominville scored in overtime against the Sens and brought us to the next round of playoffs. Now, it seems like Professor Quirrel has a curse on his hockey stick.

One great game is great...but I'm not ready to sign him up just yet. I do like the kid, though...in a favorite nephew kind of way.

it made me feel better to see him score on this level but just like with ennis consistency will tell how well he will be. if the plays friday and has another great game it will be another step towards a complete change but till then i'm not just jumping on a bandwagon, after one game.

I love the way we judge people so quickly! If he continues to play like he did last night he will jump several spots in the teams pecking order to say the least, though.

It was an encouraging development though, because he hasn't looked this good since last years training camp.

Gerbe just needed some time to adjust, I think after the ten games last year he realized what he needed to do to be an NHL player, and he has started to implement it in the AHL this year.

Ennis also will learn how to better perform, but Ennis is a goal scorer and will always be that. He also is adjusting well to the AHL and hopefully to the NHL level real soon.

A step in the right direction.

I think he's developed quite nicely in Portland. Lets see if he can continue to play this way.

No, it hasn't changed my mind, but it was nice to see the little guy score a goal. His celebration was pretty nifty :)

It's only one game BUT like a lot of guys, you can see a good level of maturation from his first year pro to his second.

I didn't think he was "horrible" last year, he just scored 1 assist in 11 games. With numbers like those, he would be a perfect fit on either of the Sabres top 2 lines this year!

I don't think we'll send him for a BACKUP. That would be stupid. I think we will, however, include him in the package to get a top 6 forward at the deadline.

Ugh personally I hope they don't, I like Gerbe. But if they bring in someone worth a damn I think I could live with it.

You know, we've got Ennis in the pipeline.

If trading Gerbe brought in somebody worth while, I'd be pretty damn excited.

But as for right now, I'm glad to have him in the line up.

The Sabres trading a decent prospect for a Top 6 forward at the deadline?

Surely you jest!

well, he stopped trying to hit people so that's a step in the right direction. He showed good hustle and was pretty smart with the puck BUT...it's just 1 game.
