Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- Sabre forward Derek Roy was back on the ice at Thursday's practice for the first time since suffering an upper body injury last week. Roy was skating on the 4th line during the workout. He will play tomorrow against Atlanta. Pat Kaleta didn't skate today, but did yesterday and Ruff said he's still struggling a bit. Nathan Gerbe has been sent back to Portland.

I am disappointed that Gerbe is back with Portlant. Wanted to see more of the midget.

Who says we need Roy to score? He hasn't played in two games and the Sabres are averaging 4.5 goals a game in that stretch.

...and our giveaways have dropped by about 50%...

I'm not thrilled by his return. Nothing personal, but he's less than responsible with the puck.

Maybe he needs to get hungry, and learn to take direction, more effectively.

We had a short discussion about this a couple days ago, Ice. And my (our) position still stands - we don't exactly need Roy back.

Good to have him back! We need some more scoring. Hopefully he will be able to add a more of a spark to the team.

I haven't missed Roy one bit, but I still insist that we need at least one of our top two centers to posses a little grit, size, and determination if we are going to go very far in todays NHL.

Which, Wyo, is why we haven't missed Roy

Roy blocks shots, takes hits, sets up plays, finishes, back checks like a maniac, and plays great on the penalty kill.

Very, very, very underrated hockey player.

I also noticed this, especially this season. I initially challenged things like him getting an A and being on the PK, but he has certainly put in the work and proved that he belongs in the current position he is in.

He performs MUCH better when kept on a short-leash. As do they all.

He's a 1st line center/play-maker when he's at the dog-show only(tightest leash). The minute he comes off the leash he remembers he runs out of breath, and is not actually a hockey player, but Jimbo teh amazing juggling clown(some loser who tries to impress children). If he out-hustles people, and retrieves pucks from corners(basically, the lines engine), then he is doing exactly what his role is. Vanek completely depends on this for success. As much as I want a play-maker for Vanek, I think Roy could be THAT guy with a true power forward, and the motivation.
