Post subject:  Favorite Player Quotes

This can really apply to ANY team in ANY sport I guess, but sometimes players make the silliest and most obvious comments when asked about their or their team's play as of late. (Can't really blame them, though. Think about it: How many different ways can you answer the question "why did you lose" after a loss?)

But Steve Montador's quote today caught my eye:
"On that long trip(west coast), we played well enough to win more games but made too many big mistakes to eventually lose them."

TRANSLATION: "We played well enough to win, but didn't win". Huh? Those kinda comments always confound me. It reminds me of people who scream that a team is better than those ahead in the standings. Yes, on paper, some teams look like they're better than other teams, but the proof is in the pudding. Isn't the whole point of standings and final scores, to identify those teams capable of actually closing the deal?

If you're better, you find a way to win, PERIOD.

You really needed to translate that?

It's a common sports cliche.

"We played well enough to win, but didn't get rewarded."
"We probably didn't deserve to win that one, but we'll take it"

Lyds - "Well, the key to the move was that there was no move."

Brian McFarlane: "Tiger, you scored two of The Leafs three second period goals, to put your team up 4 - 1. Do you expect Montreal to come out strong in the third period?"

Tiger Williams: "No, they're done like dinner."

This seems to apply to the Sabres lately:
”Last season we couldn't win at home and we were losing on the road. My failure was that I couldn't think of any place else to play.” - Harry Neale

I wish this applied to the Sabres:
”We take the shortest route to the puck and arrive in ill humor.” - Bobby Clarke

also

GUMP WORSLEY:
"We played Sunday doubleheaders against the Boston Olympics -- two games in two cities on the same day. We would play in Madison Square Garden in the afternoon, then fly to Boston for a night game, catching a snack on the plane. It was tiring, of course, but when you're young you just shrug your shoulders and strap on the equipment. Ask any hockey player today to play a doubleheader and he'd want $5,000 for the extra game. Or he'd just tell you to go to hell."
(Describing his 1949 Eastern Hockey League season with the New York Rovers. Average player salary was $150-200 per week.)

Except Roy's real words were a lot more grammatcally incorrect. I think he really said, "I can't really heard" or something like that.

He wasn't actually talking about the West Coast trip here. He was actually forshadowing to his "personal" long trip behind the net that led to the goal.
I would feel bad for the guy if he hadn't had already been playing like shit for the past month and a half.
