So, someone educate me about contracts for rookies.

When is Myers contract going to be renegotiated?
when it IS renegotiated, what is an appropriate price? What are the rules regarding rookies, and how long they are bound to their respective team?

If, say, he was a free agent after this season (which i'm assuming he isnt) what kind of money would you offer him? Do you guys think he has the ability to keep this up, and just keep improving? Do you throw roy style money (4 mill for 4 years?) or something more like 6 or 7? How much money can the sabres realistically put towards him?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but this kid CLEARLY seems like a franchise player, alongside miller and what vanek is supposed to be, I can't imagine offering him less than 5.5/year.

Buffalo will actually get incredible value on his rookie contract since he's playing from day 1. $875K is a steal. They'll have to pay out the nose to make up for the value they're getting on his rookie contract. Who fucking knows what the marklet will be for a player like that when he even gets to the RFA stage. Then I'd imagine they would want him LONG term if he's willing.

It doesn't take a genius to know that Myers is gonna be a REALLY good defenseman.. I would sign a deal for $5 mill a year in an instant, but that's only because that would be unfair to Myers.. Chara 2.0 will be worth at least $7 mill a year..

He's in the first year of his 3 year entry level deal. We cannot sign Myers to anything until 2011-2012 season.

I would not sign him to anything long and exspensive on his first contract renewal.

I say give him another 3 year deal after this one expires at 4 million a year, since he is still a young guy then, and when that expires he is still a RFA and has NO negotiation leverage basically, then you lock him into a 7 million a year for 9 year type deal or something then.

Everything will be different when Myers' contract expires. New CBA new rules. GM's want to put a max on the percentage of a raise between the first and second contracts. So players aren't going from 942,000 to 7+mill(Vanek) or from league min to 4.25(Penner). No point in taliing about Myers' contract until they agree on a new cba.

Are you clicking 'GO' next to 'Hockey Resources', or something else in the drop down? I'm fairly sure that 'Hockey Resources' is just the listbox title, and doesn't link to anything.

This site sums it up well and has links to further contract details/rules on the homepage.

Myers is under contract, as has been said, until 2012. He's making $875k with a $425k bonus, for a 1.3 mil cap hit right now. Myers will remain a restricted FA until after seven years experience, so his next deal should be three years like Sky said. That way he'll still be restricted for the next contract negotiation. It will be a nice raise but nothing huge. Like EH said the next CBA will probably determine his pay scale at that time. I would guess around 3-4 mil per season range between base salary and bonuses.

That all depends on one thing. EVERY OTHER team in the league not offering him a contract. By that time, a player like the one Myers seems to be developing into, may get a giant offer sheet thrown his way by some team, forcing us into matching it, ala Thomas Vanek. Thats what I'm worried about.

If he develops into that calibre of a player, I see no reason not to match it, unlike Vanek - we just didn't have anything else. We should have let Edmonton have his uninspired ass...

If Regier signs him to an extension before the season that he's eligible to sign one ends, then the fans will never have to worry about this happening.

We do have a significant amount of cap space coming free over the next few years. Roughly 10M comes off this year, and another 6M will come off after next. We could survive a few years on entry level contracts on some of our current AHL stars, even though we wont have to.

Myers could get a Vanek type deal, and we'd still have plenty of cap space to play with.

That's why I say it, his second contract should expire when he is still a RFA, it gives the Sabres more leverage with negotiations. Then you can sign him to something very large after that one expires.

I doubt Myers gets to July 2012 without a contract. We've already seen it that Regier will sign within the season, and if he is still here, or any GM for that matter, will sign this kid.

Ah...haha, ok...if I select something from the drop down, it takes me there no problem. If I just click the 'go' button without activating the drop downedness of the list, I get the error message and malware warning from antivirus software.
