Quote:
The Calder debate.

Let me preface this thought by saying I believe Jimmy Howard should be nominated for the Vezina Trophy; his season has been that outstanding. But I do not believe the Detroit Red Wings goalie should win the Calder Trophy. Confused? Don't be. Howard is 26 years old, four years older than Sidney Crosby, who is in his fifth NHL season. Howard is five years older than Patrick Kane, the Calder Trophy winner from two seasons ago.

I understand Howard is eligible for the award (he just slipped under the age cutoff) and he will be among my five choices in my official NHL awards ballot when I fill it out this week, but he won't be my first choice.

Tyler Myers turned 20 this past February. What he's done patrolling the blue line for the Buffalo Sabres has been truly outstanding. Among all his defensive talents, he's third in rookie scoring, trailing only forwards Matt Duchene and John Tavares. The fact he's six years younger than Howard is a big difference in my book. A month ago, I gave Duchene the nod in an early look at the awards, but I've shifted back to Myers.

Myers, baby. Tyler Franchise Myers. :D

i guess this means nabby and belfour shouldnt have won calders either.

let me repeat: goalies take longer to develop then players. i still give it to howard.

Goaltenders may take longer to develop, but defensemen can't dominate the way Myers does overnight, especially at that age.

Howard doesn't deserve Vezina... He should be a contender but that's Miller's game.

myers doesnt dominate, he just plays beyond his age. outside of great offensive numbers, hes above average, at best, defensively. hes of course going to get better, but this kid isnt elite yet. at this point, myers is a mccabe or sourey. nothing wrong with that at all, especially given hes just going to get better. but hes not a pronger or chara yet.

heres some food for thought. all season, people here and given miller the veznia and hart, even though millers numbers have slipped down. howard, for all his credit, all of his numbers are VERY close to millers, a hiccup. im not saying howard should win veznia (im actually thinking rask maybe. kids fucking INSANE) but for howard to be in that category, in his rookie year? i dont see how he can lose it.

i mean, can you say "gee, jim. GREAT season. you are a top 3 goaltender! congrats!...but sorry, even though you meet all requirements, we cant give you the calder either."

the guy meets requirements, the guy is an elite goaltender in his first season, and that is more impressive then myers.

Look at his fucking team. His offensive support is HOLY FUCKING SHIT. So is his D! Put him on Toronto and watch his numbers slip. He's good but he's on Detroit damnit.

Stupid question, do they do awards like this per conference? like the East gets their Calder and the West the other?

yeah, um. osgood is having a trainwreck of a season, the wings have suffered an avalanche of injuries, and the stars like datsyuk, zetterberg, and lidstrom, are having bad years by their standards. without howard, they are 10th in the west. howard has carried that team.

and i hate to play this childish card, but i watch the wings every game. i know a thing or two.

Without Miller, the Sabres are probably tenth in the east. 3rd to 10th is more impressive than 5th to 10th.

Now granted Howard doesn't have Gordie Howe playing in front of him anymore...

Look at his defense! Lidstrom is being nominated for an award or two, you have Ericsson, Kronwall, Stuart, Lidstrom, and more. Their offense is like the Sabre's but slightly better, as they have many people with over 20 goals and Datsyuk and Zetterburg are sick. Yeah, low numbers for their skills, but that's why their in sixth place.

You would give Rask the Vezina over Miller?

Rask has 20 wins I think.

Osgood is old as shit and nearing the end of his career, not a good example.
