Interesting...

EDIT: Gerbe will play in Torres' spot, and get time on the power play.

Yeah, Torres was on a line with Vanek and Ellis in practice. Sooo I guess that answers our question about whether Vanek is playing tonight.

I tell ya, Torres has really done a good job killing his free agency value.

Well if the rumours are true then he might be taking a pay cut to play for Toronto.

This is assuming that Toronto even wants him.

The entire basis for that rumor is a sham. Torres was born in Toronto, and has said in the past that he'd like to play for the Leafs. I think if you asked EVERY kid that grew up in Southern Ontario, they'd say that they'd like to play for the Leafs .

Another bad blunder by are conservative GM to trade a second rounder for a guy that provided nothing done the stretch for us and nothing in the playoffs. I thought he had maybe one or two decent games for us and that's it. He was a total waste of a second rounder! For an organization that really only gets players thru the draft and not trades or free agency it was too much to give up for the guy.

Torres was a bad pickup in hindsight only. At the time the trade was made, we added a big, physical presence, a guy that make a difference on the forecheck and a new leading goal scorer. During his last playoff run with the Oilers, he was almost a point per game player and was a big reason for their success.

If Darcy doesn't pick someone up, everyone would be clamoring for his head. Darcy goes out and picks up the guy that was the best fit for this team and addressed some of our needs, and it's a blunder.

Honestly, you would have been the guy screaming if Darcy didn't make a move either. He took a chance on a guy that had 19 goals, and 31 points at the deadline. What more could we have done? We got the most productive player available at the deadline, aside from Ilya...oh yeah how'd that work for Jersey?

Pronger, Crosby, Iginla, Martin, etc weren't available at the deadline. I dont know who you expected us to get, but you need to be realistic. We gave up a 2nd rounder, but got 2 additional draft picks at the deadline. We really didn't lose anything, especially since a 2nd round pick won't play in the NHL in this system for 4 years. What good does a player do us 4 years from now, while we are leading the division, and securing home ice through atleast the first round of the playoffs?

We didn't give up an impact player, and chances are we didn't give up a future impact player.

It was the best available move to be made at the time, and I still stand by it through and through. This isn't the NFL draft, the players drafted, with few exceptions, wont make an immediate impact on a roster in that given draft year.

I'm really sick of all the bitching about Regier, because he does a great fucking job! Sure he's made mistakes, but then again, all GMs have. Look at the disaster of the Rangers, Flames, Ducks, Leafs. All those teams have big bank rolls and huge resources. They all failed to make the playoffs. Why? Because they are poorly managed, and their rosters lack real depth and talent. We have that on the Sabres, and have it every year.

What more could have been done at the deadline? And since there is no disclosure clause, whats to say that Torres didn't develop an injury last game?

You know nothing about what goes on in that locker room, and neither do I. All we can do is guess; and personally I find it irresponsible for someone to say it was a bad move, because at the time it was the best possible move available.

Signing the core players to long deals was dumb. They only did it because of the PR nightmare that the Drury/Briere situation brought. Same is true for overpaying Vanek.

At the time of the Pominville signing I thought "they're paying this guy 1st line money? Why? Are they hoping it makes him a 1st line player?"

Still no go-to clutch guys. None.

And Gerbe?

Really?

Good night nurse.

I really can't believe I'm even dignifying this with a response but; locking up your core players is a bad idea? What GM school did you go to? ALL GOOD TEAMS LOCK UP THEIR CORE PLAYERS!

Philly; Richards, Carter, Gagne

Sens; Fisher, Spezza, Alfredsen

Det; Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom

Buf; Miller, Vanek, Roy, etc

Those guys are the guys that are our best players. And at the time, Vanek was in his 2nd year, and scored 40+ Goals, 84 points, and was a +47! Yeah, definitely should of let him walk for 4 1st round picks that would have equated to MAYBE 2 decent players. Vanek is an elite player. He had a down year. Next year when he scores 50, are you going to say he still sucks? He's improved his all around game, especially his defensive and back checking games.

It has nothing to do with PR, Darcy has never let the public run the team. God help us if he did. We'd have the worst team in the league, since the majority of Fans just want Grinders and Goons.

No sir, you sign your core players, and you build from within; especially when you dont live in a necessarily attractive area to Free Agents.

I do agree with Jay that all teams lock up their core players. My angst is that the sabres locked up the wrong guys. i kind of understand why that drury, briere, then campbell situation really left a bad taste in people's mouths and the sabres needed to show they were committed to their players. As well it is always easy to say well we should have traded pominville if he wanted to sign for over 5. but at the time pominville played like he was worth it. but the problem is now he's signed and we have him cause his contract is hard to move. I'd like to see one of the core guys, it would probably end up as stafford, and connolly, maybe shake things up. (those two probably have the most eatable contracts. though roy's isn't horrid.

Yall might be interested in a topic schopp was talking about earlier about money invested in a goalie vs. invested in star players. I mean you look at the teams that have star goalies, whose won a cup in the last decade. Carolina had a rookie, Maybe the Ducks but they were not paying perry and getzlaf the big bucks yet, pens have a overrated fleury. Miller is the face and star of the sabres no doubt. but look at the canucks, they can't win a cup, and have both sedins, kesler, and luongo.

If we would have let Vanek go, we would have had 4 1st round draft picks... We would have Myers and Kassian PLUS more. OH GOD.

The Sabres haven't locked up the wrong guys. They're getting better and better every single year.

The fans that complain seem to think that building a championship team happens with 1-2 signings overnight.

Fact of the matter is, this is the first playoffs in this position for our core guys, and it's going to take some time for them to adjust.

Couple that with the fact that Vanek and Hecht are out, Connolly is playing injured, our best defenseman is a 20 year old rookie, and our most talented forward has played 10 games in the NHL... and this all makes a lot of sense to me.

This year is about learning. Next year we can expect to do some damage.

And his physicality. He's no Pat Kaleta, but he gets himself in there. Everyone liked the Pominville contract when it was signed too...
