I'm not normally a fan of the player buyout, but I think that if you can't move Tim this off-season, a buyout is a reasonable option.

To buy Tim out, it's two $1.5M payments for 2010 and 2011. (Buyouts are 2/3 of the remaining contract value over twice the remaining contract length.) Those $1.5M payments still have to go against your cap, even though Tim is no longer on the roster.

Net effect? They save $3M next year, and have $1.5M in 'dead money' the following year. That dead money is usually the problem with the buyout, but I think that the Sabres can absorb that hit and still put together a good roster.

You try to trade him away, packaged with an asset with value. If you can great, if not I agree with you 110%

You also put Pominville and Roy on notice, that they are next.

Here is why it won't happen....the front office would have to admit a mistake, something they have never done.

Already said that they should try other options first.

Waivers are a crapshoot. If nobody claims him, you can assign him to Portland, but you're still on the hook for his full salary. The buyout allows you to save a little cash on the contract, in this case at the expense of some cap space down the road.

His buyouts aren't too bad considering it will be for a last resort

Yeah, a final year contract buyout isn't terrible generally. The only consideration is that dead money on the cap, but $1.5M of dead money to get someone else in here that doesn't blow is worth it IMO.

The front office should be over caring what people think by now....since they've pissed off most people already anyway.

Just go out and do what needs to be done.

Like I said in the other Connolly thread, he might have been a bust in the playoffs, but if the Sabres can't trade away a player that has 112 points in his last 121 regular season games with only 1 year left on his contract, we(and alot of other teams) have a problem.

Agreed. I'd like to think his playoff bust was a function of the late season injury and the resulting lack of conditioning. If he can average a point a game (and he can), then he's worth $4.5 mil.

Guys, I'd like to think that Connolly sucks as much as the next guy, but honestly? The guy was playing great up until he blocked a shot which broke his foot. My only problem was that Connolly tried to do way too much with a bunch of nothing, but honestly, it's no reason to consider a buyout for nearly a PPG player.

He was a playoff bust his last time around too.

2006-2007 Playoffs
GP 16
G 0
A 9
P 9

Combine that with this year's pathetic performance, and you see a guy that doesn't show up when it's tough.

Lindy Ruff said in his postgame comments that Connolly was healthy and not injured for these playoffs.

Tim Connolly said in his locker room interview that he was healthy and not injured for these playoffs.

Where is this magically injury coming from that the coach and player both deny was there?

Connolly is a .89 PPG regular season player since his missed year. He's a .45 PPG playoff performer during that same timeframe.

This is not a guy that performs in the playoffs.

Roy's buyout would be $9.3M over 6 years.

Dead money on the cap would be:
2010-2011: $1,555,556
2011-2012: $1,055,556
2012-2013: $55,556
2013-2014: $1,555,556
2014-2015: $1,555,556
2015-2016: $1,555,556

Not sure why people are saying we're "STUCK" with Roy.

He's one of the best 2nd line centers in the league, and he plays both sides of the puck very well.

Find somebody to replace Connolly and play a first line center position, and that Roy contract would look awesome.
