Quote:
On a Toronto radio station earlier this week, Leafs GM Brian Burke indicated that defenseman Tomas Kaberle is generating some interest throughout the league. Local Toronto radio is reporting that Buffalo was one of two teams that have contacted Brian Burke about acquiring defenseman Tomas Kaberle.

This is a move by the Sabres that makes a great deal of sense. Kaberle is an extremely gifted offensive defenseman and an established power play quarterback. He has one year remaining on his contract, with a cap hit of 4.25 million.

At the trade deadline, I advocated making an aggressive pitch to acquire Kaberle. He would have significantly improved our power play. As many suspected, our struggling power play proved to be our achilles heal in the playoffs.

Other than his keen offensive vision and skills, Kaberle brings some other interesting intangibles:

First, with him at the point, Vanek will instantly score 10+ more goals than last season. Kaberle is a skilled power play quarter back, and a great offensive dman. He’ll get shots to the net. Vanek’s bread and butter on the power play (tipping shots) was in effect not an option for him this season due to the Sabres sub par power play.

Second, Kaberle can mentor Myers and help hone his offensive skills. He’s an elite passer and has great offensive vision. A pairing of Myers and Kaberle could be extremely effective (think of it as a lesser “Pronger/Niedermeyer” combo).

I’d be willing to surrender our 1st round pick to acquire Kaberle. A 1st Round Pick and a prospect not named Ennis or Kennedy.

And if Darcy is willing to make this move, I am excited at other moves he may make in the off season.

Truth be told, Gerbe's performance in the playoffs has re-endeared him to me. At this point, I'd rather keep Gerbe over Kennedy.

Regardless of who Toronto would get for Kaberle from the Sabres, I want Stafford gone. If he goes to Toronto, fine. But I want him gone.

It's because deep down, somewhere underneath his rock star dreams, lies the hockey player who was tearing it up in 2006/2007. Ya know, the one scoring on breakaways and punching Chris Neil.

I'm scared too of letting Drew go. Fuck he could such a force but he obviously doesn't have the passion.

If he wanted, he could be the winger who put that sexy between-the-feet backhander in on the Leafs all the time. But like you said, he just doesn't have the passion.

Fuck I love that move Phil. I tried the Connolly move against the leafs in hockey once but couldn't bury. Woulda been sweeet.

Why trade for a big contract like Kaberle when you can sign Foster for less without giving anything in return?

Tomas Kaberle...82 games...7-42-49...-16...25 PP pts...4.25 mil/per season.

Kurtis Foster......71 games...8-34-42...-5...26 PP pts...about 2 mil/per season.

Foster is 3 1/2 years younger, bigger and better defensively, and right-handed which is important in two seasons when both Rivet and Montador become UFAs.

Kaberle has the reputation, but Foster was a PP force for TB with a tremendous point shot. If not for playing in the Minnesota trap and then breaking his femur, Foster would already have a reputation like Kaberle. Better GMs see up-and-coming players that are cheaper and under market value. There's no need to pay big dollars on a high priced vet that is lacking defensively and (sometimes) in effort.

Kaberle to Buffalo rumors and speculation have gone on since, I dunno, Kaberle got to Toronto.

Highly unlikely, and not someone I would want unless it's an extend and trade. Giving up stuff for one year so he can leave in free agency doesn't appeal to me.

Burke wants a big, physical, goal scoring forward.

I can't see Kennedy or Gerbe being guys that intrigue Burke.

Stafford + 1st might.

Kassian + 1st might.

You have to take chances if you want to be a success, and I think this would be a good calculated risk. For one thing Kaberle really is a proven PPQB, Toronto almost always has a decent power play despite some pretty bad teams, only last season being the exception. I do not think the Sabres would have a hard time recovering from a deal like that if it doesn't work out, thanks in part to their very talented scouting department. If Kaberle doesn't fit in with the team on the ice, you can just let him walk via UFA and sign somebody else with that money who might be a better fit. If he does work out, you could offer a long term contract and solidify the power play for years to come. At 32, he could be good for another 5 years of 50+ point production, defense men who know how to slip a check like Kaberle can last in the NHL well into their late 30's. 4.5 per year would probably work out.

I agree with Tom about Kaberle needing to be extended for this deal to be worth it.

I do not agree with JB about Foster. His kid died. It's tragic and I feel for the man, but he'll most likely never be the same player. Do not want.

I tried the connolly move in inline, but was so shocked I successfully pulled it off that my shot on goal was kind of shitty.

So, same as Connolly?

I'd take Kaberle for Stafford and a 1st, it's even better if we could get him signed for a few years.

That was me, and that's a wierd reason to avoid a player. Obviously he's going to have a rough time, but players overcome all kinds of personal adversity. Taylor Pyatt came back strong after losing his wife/fiance. Jose Theodore didn't cave in after losing his child last season. Foster's daughter was only five days old, so that's not a lot of bonding time and emotional investment as losing a child you've spent years with and knew their personality and so on. Foster, on the ice anyway, should be fine.

I was actually referencing his view in another thread, but forgot to make mention of it.
