Looking at two guys who are going to be free agents this year. Tough sell one way or the other. Both make for the sake of argument, the same salary (within 5 figures). Player B will probably command more salary than Player A depending on where they sign. Player A 32 years old Height - 6-1 Weigh - 208 Average GP (last 3 years) - 76 Average G (last 3) - 4 Average A (last 3) - 19 Average Pts (last 3) - 23 +/- (last 3) - +11 (+1, even, +10) Average hits (last 3) - 146 Average blocked shots (last 3) - 141 Average PIM (last 3) - 58 ATOI (last 3) - 20:46 Player B 28 years old Height - 6-1 Weigh - 226 Average GP (last 3 years) - 66 Average G (last 3) - 2 Average A (last 3) - 13 Average Pts (last 3) - 15 +/- (last 3) - +6 (+14, -10, +2) Average hits (last 3) - 181 Average blocked shots (last 3) - 168 Average PIM (last 3) - 73 ATOI (last 3) - 20:27 |

Michalek vs. Volchenkov. I think Regier tries to re-sign Lydman before going after another defensive d-man. If any UFA d-man is signed, it will be a puck mover. But to answer your question, Michalek by default because Volchenkov's price will go through the roof of his actul value. |

Volchenkov made 3.2M. |

It's Lydman on top and Volchenkov on the bottom. Just looked up your stats and it was quite easy since you gave us +/- for the past three years. |

I just found it funny that people are talking about the above two players like one is mediocre, and the other is a savior when they're really very similar. One is a bit more conservative and not as offensively talented, but more physical and one takes more risks resulting in more points but has a slightly less physical game. Personally I think both make too much money. by 500k - 1M. |

i like lydman, but he seems to turn the puck over too often. how many times do you hear "lydman clears it... but not out.." a game? too many. that being said, outside that, toni is a keeper, and a solid D-man. |

That's a reason I like Michalek over keeping Lydman - he plays nearly the exact same game, but turns it over FAR less. |

Yeah, I think turnovers might be the only category where you'll start to see an appreciable difference between Lydman and Volchenkov. But I think Lydman has performed better in the playoffs where he's a career +11 at roughly the same ppg versus Volchenkovs even rating (and he's been playing with better talent). |

Both are pretty much the same like you've said. But Lydman will come cheaper as he is a bit older also. |

I'll say it here as well, Lydman is one of the more reliable defenders in the game. He is high on my list, but if it comes down to spending another million to get a Volchenkov I would make that addition. |
