This thread has been made official by Yancy's fancy.. WNY's premier artisan cheese I read from a poster a few days ago that we are very much under the cap and we need to spend.. So what is the 2010-2011 salary cap at? As of right now, how much under the cap are we? |

The 2010/2011 NHL season's salary cap ceiling is $59.4M The Buffalo Sabres currently have $10.3M in cap space (data courtesy of http://capgeek.com - bookmark that shit) |

There are five forward spots to fill (Kennedy, Kaleta, Ennis, maybe Gerbe and Ellis or a new RW). There is one d-man spot open (maybe Weber or a new guy), and the back-up goalie spot (probably Lalime or Enroth). At least five of the seven openings will cost under 1 mil each, so there should be around six mil to upgrade at forward, d-man, or both. |

If the Sabres do not do anything else, there are only two roster spots open - Kennedy's and Kaleta's, because neither is under contract yet. Similarly, if the Sabres are done, the defense is full (6 with Rivet out, 7 when he's back). The back-up slot is open. |

Kennedy will probably get close to $1.5-ish in arbitration. |

Guys in the similar range include Foligno (made 750K last year), Wellwood (1.2M) Ryan O'Reilly (900K), and Erik Christensen (750, signed for 925K next year) All in all, I'd be absolutely shocked if Kennedy got anything more than any of what those guys make. Especially more than Wellwood. I think we're gonna have about 8.5M left in cap space when the arbitration ends, and if we decide to roll with what we've got, next season, we have another 8-9M coming off the books between Grier, Rivet, and Connolly...maybe making it more viable to try to get into a situation where we could throw some money at a true #1 star free agent like a Richards, Semin, or day I say Chara if he doesnt come to terms with Boston. |

Well, Chara has already begun negotiating an extension with the Bruins. Just sayin'. |

That's like saying we're the other team in the running for Kovalchuk. I definitely don't expect any sort of additional D signings; but effin eh, we've got quite a bit of cap room to dangle a decent carrot. |

Yeah clearly we wont do it, but we'd have the roster, and the money to do it is all I'm saying. Which is why I'm kind of content with the roster we have now, and the nice job of cap management done by Darcy since the lock out. Especially with Richards, and Semin both being available next year, and both would instantly make us far better than we already are. |

Especially with Alex Semin being a RW. |

I've just seen arbitration awards generally skewed more towards the player in recent years, and with the cap going up again, I can see the arbitrator pushing that value up a little higher than in years past. |

I just want to point out that with 12 forwards, 7 defensemen (I count Weber), and 2 goaltenders under contract, the Buffalo Sabres have only spent $52.5M against the cap. With bonuses factored out, the Sabres still $8.2M left to play with. |
