Post subject:  Why doesn't our owner have this passion?

Dan Gilbert (Cleveland Cavalier's owner) wrote this after the Lebron debacle. I envy that team and all its supporters for having an owner that is this passionate:

Quote:
Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

“I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE”

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our “motivation” to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that’s simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown “chosen one” sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And “who” we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called “curse” on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former “King” will be taking the “curse” with him down south. And until he does “right” by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day….

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue….

While I know that he lost his validity when he guaranteed a title before Lebron wins one, it's still that kind of passion that would be nice to see here in Buffalo.

Golisano bought the team as an investment and not because he has any passion for hockey.

Now if someone could get Balsillie off his "move a team to Southern Ontario" kick........

You know, I have never once watched an NBA game in it's entirety, I don't find enough entertainment value in the sport to invest even an hour of my life into it. But for the first time I want an NBA team to win, and it's the Cavaliers.

Howard Simon on WGR this morning was blathering about how this letter was 'inciting Cleveland fans to go and destroy LeBron's property'. He's usually pretty solid, but that was probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard someone say.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous, unless that wasn't his interpretation of the letter; rather, some of the reaction of Cleveland fans?

Gilbert has every right to be pissed.

That organization gave LeBron everything he wanted. Never told him no. Let him do whatever he wanted.

In return, LeBron couldn't give Gilbert the courtesy of returning phone calls during the last week. Couldn't be bothered to sit down with the Cavs and tell them face to face that he wasn't coming back.

Instead, he built up all this hype, and slapped the Cavs in the face on national television.

Cleveland residents were calling in trying to correct him, and he stayed right with it. Some trucker called in to say that if someone was deranged enough to go damage property over this, it wouldn't be that letter that pushed them over the top. Simon shot that down, saying that the whole 'karma' thing was nothing but a veiled signal from the organization to go burn LeBron's shit.

It was pretty pathetic.

While I agree with you on going on national television was a wrong, I don't think the orginization really gave him everything. Not once in the seven years he played there did they really build a championship team around him. They didn't trade or sign for other big names to help him out but instead kept mediocre/good players and it never resulted in anything but pre-mature post season knockout.

Just my two cents, don't take it to heart :)

Expanding on my thoughts that I posted in the above link...I understand that he's pissed. I get that LeBron James disrespected the man who gave him everything. I do love the passion of that guy. But as an owner, what he did goes beyond Mark Cuban talking trash and MAY go beyond George Steinbrenner calling someone a "fat pussy toad" (someone educate me on that incident please!) - it's destroyed his credibility and will most likely hamper their ability to re-build. Sure, this was a unique case given LeBron being a hometown boy, but players have to think about what kind of owner he is if he types out a letter in Comic Sans MS ;) But seriously, players have to think what kind of owner he is if he publicly blasts a player (again, I know the situation is unique, but now it's something other players are gonna think about).

I'd rather not see "passion" displayed by a team owner if it's a bunch of whining and carrying on like a 12 year old girl who just got dissed by the Jonas brothers.

Post subject:  Re: Why doesn't our owner have this passion?

I agree with pretty much everything which was said in this thread.

I get the fact the owner is pissed that the guy who has basically been given everything he ever wanted, pretty much bought and paid for a public announcement to give the finger to his home town, but he's not really setting any kind of level respect for kids who look up to these, uh, "Athletes".

Now, I'm not a fan of James, the NBA or anything else that is not related to or is not a form of hockey, but if the guy wanted to go to Miami, then cut your losses and move on. The great saying, "Actions speak louder than words" comes to mind here. Don't preach to the masses that you're going to win an NBA title before he does, shut up and do it. The owner is just as much as a “fat pussy toad” as James.

Also, major props to Phil for giving me my new quote of the day :D

FUCK Lebron. If Miller held a fucking reality TV show to shit on Buffalo you would feel the exact same way towards him or anybody else who did that.

It's not so much that he left, it's how he dragged it out and allowed it to become a show at the Cleveland Caviliers expense that would have made me angry about it.

I went through something like this with Jagr but it wasn't like he wanted to leave, he just knew the Penguins couldn't afford him so in his mind he had to move on. The Penguins were in bankruptcy, they could not pay him so they traded him. The media painted Jagr out as the bad guy who wanted out but it was much more complicated then that.

Then again with Hossa, who I personally didn't want back anyways I wanted Malone back or Ryder for a lot less than Hossa. But he strung them a long during a month, then 2 days into free agency then went to a bitter rival, stating that he wanted to win a Cup and that Pittsburgh wasn't good enough. That pissed me off.

But what Lebron did was the worst. It's not that he took his time. It's not even for the reasons he left. It's the fact that he made a show of it at his home towns expense. Those owners were too polite if you ask me.

Fuck lebron go cavs!

Giving up in the playoffs the last 2 years and not returning a single call from the owner who's paid you millions are 2 ways that Lebron is a bitch coward.

How does a self-dubbed King ask permission to join another superstar's team?

He's a punk bitch....and no matter how many titles he wins in Miami....Wade will be +1 on him.

F Lebron as today I'm now pulling for the Lakers. (And I've was born a Laker hater.) You think Kobe's on he phone asking to play on another superstar's team. Kobe probably stopped for 5 minutes to hear where Lebron's destination city was and then went back to practice.
