Veteran forward Mike Grier(notes) reached his breaking point in the second period of Friday’s loss to Montreal. He had a golden scoring chance when center Rob Niedermayer(notes) sent him a slick pass from the blue line, but Grier’s re-direction in the slot sailed over the net. Moments later, Grier had a wide-open Thomas Vanek(notes) in front, but his pass attempt got past the winger.

Grier went to the bench, grabbed his stick like an ax, and two-handed the defenseless weapon over the boards and into three pieces.

“That’s probably three out of five games for me that I’ve had a point-blank shot at key moments, and I haven’t put it in,” Grier said. “It’s unacceptable.”
