Post subject:  Dumb Questions

Many here have complained about the questions asked of Lindy and the team by the press.

There are 2 schools of thought on this:

1) These guys, including the coach, are paid a lot of money---all coming from the fans in one way ro another, so the fans have a right to hear these guys grilled, especially during tough times.

2) What is accomplished by asking questions with obvious answers---or a lack thereof?

It seems that many questions are really just critiques of the team in the form of a question. So many times I think to myself "what do you expect them to say" after hearing a question that is highlighting awful play.

So many times people ridicule players and coaches for the redundancy of their answers. Well, How many different ways can you answer what are more or less the same questions, particularaly when a team is in a slump?

It's the ol' poke-the-dog-with-a-stick scenario. I guess when fans are angry it makes them feel better, but other than that it doesn't really advance anything.

It's what reporters do.

I hate the question asked whenever someone wins a championship.

"How does it feel to win?" Well we all know the obvious answer of IT'S GREAT. Someday I would love for an athlete to just say, "I wish we didn't win this championship because now we're gonna be expected to repeat and that's hard to do, it really sucks."

I like "How does it feel to win". You get great moments like Teemu Selanne not being able to speak and hiding his face behind his hat cuz he's modest.

It is different when you get the old guys who have never won before doing it, but some of them are just like, come on. Let them enjoy it and leave them alone.

I know I've had this argument before with you and a few others.

Nothing will top Chris Rose asking Renteria if he was going to retire about 3 minutes after he accepted the World Series MVP trophy.

Moron.

I dunno, I think Buck basically asking Lindy if he should be fired was pretty good.

I'll ask the same question I asked previously.

What coach is going to give any other answer than 'no' to that question?

Did he really think Lindy would say "Yeah, I should be fired. I'm clearly not getting the job done." That was just Bucky's way of saying "they should really consider firing you". Again, it was an opinion framed as a question to which you couldn't expect a reasonable answer. That's why they're uncomfortable to listen to. You're basically dressing the guy down in front of everybody. Poking with a stick, as it were.

In a weird way it reminds me of this occasional circumstance in society where guys sometimes ask a woman whether or not she is breastfeeding her new baby. They aren't genuinely concerned about how the kid is getting his nourishment, they're just getting off on talking to the chick about something realted to her tits. It may sound funny, but I've witnessed this so many times. They don't ask about diaper changes or growth patterns or sleeping habits---just about the sucking the tits part. It's comical.

So in conclusion, Lindy is the new mother---and the press's need to needle him about the team's shitty play is them getting off on his big, milk-filled tits. They're certainly not expecting actual answers to some of those answerless questions.

God I love Teemu.

The coach can refuse to answer any question or end any interview he wants. As someone said, answering the tough questions is why he makes the big bucks. When a team is down, that's when the questions are toughest. When things are good, the questions are easier. Simple solution is to make things better, then you won't have to answer the hard ones.
