| Post subject: | WGR Report: Marty was negotiating with the Sabres |
WGR "Paille Back In" Within this report, something interesting is pointed out - Marty was negotiating with the Sabres and it wasn't about the money! Quote: When Biron found out he wasn't going back to Philadelphia he started negotiations with the Sabres. Marty said, "We were fairly serious, to be honest this wasn't about money, it wasn't about anything other than trying to get a fit where I was going to get to play and put myself in a position that on January 1st, I can look for a long term deal with the organization that I'm with. This is a unique year because it's an Olympic year and because it was a lot of games. I knew that a situation like Buffalo would've been a situation where I would've gotten in to play some games, more than usual but at the same time I think this situation will give me the best chance to play on a regular basis and not sit for a couple of weeks or four or five games. Now, was I excited about possibly, maybe coming back? Very. I know 95-percent of these guys personally and I was excited about maybe coming back, but you make sacrifices." So, Larry, Marty freakin' Biron wanted to come back as OUR BACKUP and didn't care WHAT HE FREAKIN' MADE and you didn't do what was necessary!? Eat Lalime's $1 million, bring in Biron for the same price, and SERIOUSLY upgrade the backup position!

He signed a one year deal with the Isles right? I can only hope that we sign him next year or even at deadline. How we passed on the opportunity this year, is shear stupidity. This makes me |

Understandably, Marty wants to be somewhere he has a great chance to sign a long-term deal and that place isn't Buffalo, but he clearly indicated that coming back to Buffalo was about getting a chance to play a bunch of games, knowing that Ruff would be confident about playing him frequently enough during an olympic year where Miller will probably be Team USA's starter. I would be DRASTICALLY more confident about this season with Marty back, even moreso than I already am. |

I got the impression that Marty made the decision to go to the Isles because he felt he had a better chance to become their primary goalie or get serious playing time than he would in Buffalo...I wouldn't be surprised if he tried again next season to come back when Patty is gone. |

With Enroth looking incredibly shaky in Portland, I wouldn't be surprised. With this last offseason, I have the feeling that Marty moved onto the Islanders and immediately said yes to them when it became apparent that the Sabres weren't going to bring him back. WNY probably feels like home to him - no one loves Marty like we love Marty. |

Thing is with Marty here he would have much more room for error with fans than he would anywhere else in the league. I think by next season it'll b e clear his best years are behind him, so there won't be that same itch to become primary or bust. A lot depends on what Enroth shows this season...I'm certainly not going to just write him off after a couple shaky games to start the season in Portland. |

Well, in regards to Enroth, from what I've checked out, he's getting beaten in the same ways he had been getting beaten last season. It may be more metal errors than physical. But you're right, I'd be remiss to write him off so early as well. If he doesn't finish strong though...Marty may be a great choice. |

face_palm. So, a goaltender who is considerabley better than your current backup goalie, offers to return to your team as backup, regardless of how much money he gets paid, and you don't sign him? Wowwwwwwwwww. |

Hmm...that's pretty surprising to be honest. I thought the Isles were a good choice for him because he gets a chance to take a starting role in Long Island since their goaltending situation is always up in the air. |

Let's be honest. He was not getting any offers. For a reason. He really isn't that great. |

Even if enroth is ready to come up to the NHL, Miller will still have 4 years left on his contract. If Enroth truly is the future of the organization i wouldn't mind having him play a couple more season's in portland or where ever the affiliation be. and bring him up when miller only has say two years left on the contract. Such that miller is aging, still the primary but enroth will get more starts as they more than likely will not be ridding miller as hard. So that would give us the option to have marty for at least a two year deal. and give us three solid goalies. I mean Howard i think spent close to 5 years in detroit's system at Grand rapids, and dominated the last couple, so with enroth down there learning to be close to perfection, then he can come in and be above the curve. I present this because with the way the sabres ride miller (maybe b/c the backup is not to be trusted or whatever), it would seem a waste to have the future supposed stud goalie of the sabres be sitting on the bench instead of playing games, even if they are AHL. Of course this all depends on whether or not enroth proves he is adequate earlier than the two extra years in portland i am having him spend. As well it also depends on how well miller plays into his thirties. But yea i really would not have minded seeing lalime bought out and marty signed. Ruff i'm sure trusted marty when he put him in to give the sabres a really good chance to win the game (sure Ruff would be more apt to play Biron than say lalime). |

Wow. That's actually surprising. I hope we bring him back at some point, maybe next offseason? The circumstances will be different, though... Not an Olympic year, for one thing. I would still love to see him back. |
