I'm probably gonna get lambasted for this, but here goes anyway...

Myers is having an awful season. As good as he was last year, he's just as bad this year. Having watched every game this year, either on TV or in person, I would say not a single aspect of his game has improved. You can live with some drop-off offensively, especially from a young defenseman, but his D has been embarassing. The number of brutal giveaways (seems like he's good for 2-3 per game), lost one-on-one puck battles in the d-zone with guys smaller than him, and frequent getting caught out of position have led to at least as many goals against this year as could be attributed to any other player, and probably more.

Seems like the coaches, media, and fans give him a pass for his poor play while other guys get hammered disproportionately for playing no worse. I'm yet to be convinced he is going to be a great number 1 defenseman for years to come, given the massive drop-off this year in both offense and defense. He's got the tools, but his head ain't right and he can't live off the afterglow of Rookie of the Year for much longer.

He's had some bad stretches, but he's had some good ones too, especially in the last 2-3 weeks around the All Star break.

Frankly, winning the Calder is a huge Sophomore Slump Get Out Of Jail Free Card for just about anyone, especially a defenseman.

phil showed me this article, with stats to back it up, that showed myers is actually playing better this season, but the players around him are sucking.

myers is fine, but the guy HAS to work on his give aways. im not sure what the problem is, but his passing can be bad.

what i am seeing is myers being more physical this year. and i like that. he will be fine.

Indeed. I like to see him roughing people up more and more. Long term, he'll need to that to excel, plus we'd all like to see a bigger version of Pronger I think.

Defense is hard. He'll be ok.

Just sayin' that while he may not be able to recapture the magic from last year, in a young player, would like and expect to see improvement in at least some areas rather than a drop-off across the board. I actually think the last couple of weeks haven't been good for him -- Lindy benched him during one game of this latest stretch, and he continues to turn the puck over with alarming regularity.

I do have to say that without a reliable guy like Hank on his line he's dealing with sub par crap D. Add to that a slump in his own play and you have something that (I think) seems worse than it is.

Blame it on Tallinder leaving... lol

I don't buy the poor D teammate argument. Many of his errors are unassisted and unforced. I will admit that his hitting is a little better, but still way too sporadic for a guy with his size and mobility.

I didn't blame it on that, I said it was part of the problem. Do you think him leaving had nothing to do with it? He was Myers' mentor last year and a solid rock as a line partner.

Myers is trying to do things himself instead of using his partner. You can't rely on that, and it's a common mistake made by young defenseman.

He'll probably grow out of that.

Oh no, that wasn't directed towards you. I was just stating it as a joke and didn't refresh my browser before you posted your comment.

For about 5.5 million less than Gonchar, he's having a better season than him. My only beefs with Myers play is his puck management in his own zone. Especially early in the season (his +/- will never recover from it), he was falling down all the time, coughing the puck up, moving it to opponents, and not protecting it from forecheckers. He's improved that from a level that has no place in the NHL to average. Still needs more confidence playing in the defensive zone. More authoritative decisions, and quicker accurate breakout passes.

The second problem I have is the inconsistent physical play. He seems reluctant to want to fight for the puck along the boards or punish players for trying to skate past him. He needs to play with a chip on his shoulder in my opinion. Hopefully he reads this and plays to prove me wrong! LOL yeah right.

He got taller, stronger, and heavier, and lost his equilibrium. He's starting to get it back.

Hell, he just turned 21 on February 1st. He's just a kid yet!

He's getting a "pass" because he's so young and it's only his sophomore season. Not to mention the fact that he was the Calder winner last year. I think every Sabres fan knows that his season has been pretty disappointing and he's capable of being a lot better, but sometimes players go through off years. Especially so early in a career when there is still so much to learn. He'll be fine.

Myers will be fine, he's 21 and has plenty to learn. It's not like he's 31 and still struggling.

He's on pace for 10 goals and 27 assists, which is just 1 goal and 10 assists less than his rookie year. So he hasn't regressed THAT far.

Last year he didn't really have any awful games, and this year he's had at least a handful.

I agree with Caroline, his youth is keeping a lot of people from jumping on him.
