Not being a goaltender, I'm probably not qualified to judge a goaltender's technique, so would like to hear some comments/opinions about this as to whether I'm off base or not:

In watching Miller this year, it seems like he has 2 major flaws: 1) going down early on shots and getting beaten cleanly up high over the shoulder (happened on at least 2 and maybe all 3 goals against last night). 2) Overplaying the shooter when being approached from a wide angle, and then being ridiculously out of position when there is a loose rebound in front of the net. Some of it's on the D to clean house in front of the net, but goalie can't be in the next zip code after the initial shot is taken.

Is this the book on Miller?

Thoughts?

i honestly blame the defense, because enroth hasnt been any better outside his torrid start. since than, hes lost like 8 of 10 with a GAA over 3 and a save percentage below .900.

miller is honestly being victimized by bad defensive lapses and bad bounces. he looks fine and square with good technique, but the puck is finding a way past him. its just more noticeable this year because its happening on a nightly basis. he is struggling, yes. but the struggles arnt his alone.

This. Dude is going WAY out, at very odd angles, and when he loses sight of the puck HE JUST FUCKING SITS THERE, while the opposing players are moving the puck around and eventually into the net. We all know Miller is agressive to the shooter, but he is having mind farts about GETTING THE HELL BACK IN NET when his gambit doesnt work.

Miller's glove looks very weak this season. Shoot it high glove side and wait for the horn.

Miller has always been one to move way to fucking far out of his net to follow the shooter (and it drives me crazy). He's always done that. To be able to do this successfully he needs to have solid defense in front to prevent the wrap around, block the shot off a quick pass, etc. This year its bitten him more then it has recently but Miller doing this is nothing new.

Miller going down on shots is a staple of the butterfly style of goaltending and its something that all goalies who practice this style do. The benefit to this style is that when you go down the bottom of the net is covered in case of low-to-the-ice shots that get deflected. the downside is that the top of the net is wide open. It is possible that Miller is going down to quickly and giving the shooter a great target up top.

I think that its both bad luck/defense and a slight misstep in technique. The defense/bounces are causing him to cheat in the butterfly leaving open more areas of the net.

I agree with everyone but Mike. Miller, like many butterfly goalies goes down too soon sometimes. He has also been flopping a lot lately from having to recover. Those, for the most part, aren't on the D.

i wouldnt go that far. Millers been doing stuff like that for years and only recently has it been biting him. While I do think that there might be a slight misstep in Millers technique, the defense (or sometimes lack there off) isnt doing him any favors and might actually be attributing to the misstep.

Honestly I haven't seen him as "floppy" as he has been lately. I agree alot of it has to do with the defense and their inability to control the puck or the opposing players.

Ryan Miller's biggest mistake seems to be that he married the wrong woman! ;)

He better get a divorce if he wants to be a good goalie again.

I really want to see him get back into form, but it seems like everything bad that can happen, is happening to Miller. Pucks off skates, sticks, glass, everything.

He is not among the league's elite; but he has shown to be a more than competent goalie over the years. He is capable of stealing games; which he hasn't done yet this season.

We had best pray to Grier he gets his game back to where it should be....

I have said this for awhile now is that since the olympics he hasn't been the same goalie. He was motivated that year to be team USA starting goalie and hasn't been as solid since! He's a good goalie but not elite

He's different than his Vezina year, I don't think there's much doubt of that. My wife just asked me what I thought is wrong, and what I came up with is that it's the concussions. I think there's something to that idea. Imagine if maybe his vision is just slightly blurryer than it used to be. Or maybe his reactions or his thinking has slowed a little. Brain and neurological injuries are very volatile. If anything involving his vision or his mental processing has been affected, even to the slighest degree, that could have huge results on his performance.

I thought about the concussions too. If that's the reason I feel bad for bashing him but either way, you won't win many games with a 0.900 goalie.

I think Miller and Jonas Hiller are the poster children for this sentiment. They were both pretty much atop the league not too long ago, and have fallen pretty far quickly.
